Online assessments may be timed or untimed, and may be taken only once or multiple times, depending on the type of assessment and how your instructor intends to use it. When a new assessment is made available, an Announcement containing a link directly to the assessment will usually be posted.

To begin taking an assessment, click its link. Before the assessment opens, a popup window will appear asking if you are sure you want to take the assessment. To begin taking the assessment, click OK. If you are not ready to take the assessment, click Cancel.

The six possible question types are listed below. Question types listed in bold are usually scored instantaneously; question types listed in red are usually manually-scored by the instructor.

When you have answered all the test questions, click the Submit button in the bottom-right of the assessment page.

  • Multiple Choice - Select one correct answer from several options. The correct answer is selected by clicking a radio button.
  • True/False - The correct response is either true or false. The correct answer is selected by clicking a radio button.
  • Fill in the Blank - Enter your answer into the provided text field(s). Answers are evaluated based on an exact text match.
  • Multiple Answer - Select more than one correct answer from several options. The correct answers are selected by clicking checkboxes.
  • Matching - Associate questions with their correct answers.
  • Short Answer - Answer the question in one or two sentences by typing in a text field.
  • Essay - Provide a longer answer by typing in a text field.

Depending on the instructor and the assessment, different levels of instantaneous feedback may be provided, ranging from highly detailed (giving correct answers and comments) to none at all.

Assessments that do not contain either Short Answer or Essay questions will be scored instantaneously and immediately added to your Student Gradebook.

Occasionally, a problem will occur while you are taking your test that prevents you from submitting it. If this happens, email your instructor. He or she will be able to reset the test for you.

Surveys are not scored. If you are given an online survey, your instructor will be able to tell whether or not you have completed it, but they will not be able to distinguish your individual responses from those of the rest of the class.
