The Minimum Requirements ...

Computer

  • Windows 95 or greater, or Macintosh Operating System 9 or greater; 64Mhz or greater. (32Mhz can be used, although it may be very slow.)
  • Modem 56K minimum (a modem slower than 56k can be used, but may time out).
  • ISP Account [Internet Service Provider]. Check to see who is available in your area. www.thelist.com is an excellent resource for finding an inexpensive alternative ISP by area code. Before you sign up for an ISP, make sure it offers a local number in your area.

NOTE ABOUT INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS: We do not recommend using Comcast or America On-Line as your ISP. We recommend using an alternative browser instead (see the Browsers section below for downloadable options).

  • eMail account. As a student at UDM you can obtain a UDM email account through the IT Department (more information is available at http://it.udmercy.edu). There are also many free email providers on the internet.  Your employer may also provide you with an email account. It is not necessary to use the UDM account in order to participate.
  • Virus Protection. Either McAffee VirusScan or Norton AntiVirus are strongly recommended.

Browsers

It is a good idea to have two browsers in case one isn't working properly. The newer browsers have more features and render some pages more clearly than the older versions.

Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater

Netscape 7 or greater

Firefox 1.5 or greater, Mozilla 2.0 or greater

Opera 7.0 or greater

Browser Plugins

You will need several browser plugins to view most of the media and text files on your course sites. These plugins are quite common, and you may already have one or all of them installed on your computer. If not, they can be downloaded from the following websites:

QuickTime Player 7.1.3 or greater

Flash Player 8.0 or greater

Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 or greater
