PENNSYLVANIA GERMANS (NATIONALITY GROUP)

A COLONY OF AMISH PEOPLE NOW LIVE IN COLON, MICHIGAN. THEY MOVED
HERE FROM PENNSYLVANIA TO ESCAPE PROBLEMS WITH THEIR TEACHERS NOT
HAVING CERTIFICATES. NOW THEY ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM IN COLON.
ONE CAN TELL AN AMISH HOUSE IN COLON, MICH. BECAUSE THE WINDOWS
NEVER HAVE CURTAINS. THEY ONLY HAVE SHADES. THERE IS NO ELECTRICITY
OR LUXURIES IN THEIR HOUSES. THE PEOPLE OFTEN TAKE THEIR
HORSE AND BUGGY TO THE LOCAL SUPERMARKET, LEAVING THE HORSE TIED
TO A HITCHING POST OFF TO THE SIDE. THEY WILL NEVER BUY FOOD WITH
PRESERVATIVES AND PREFER TO EAT A RATHER THICK TASTING BREAD.
THE INFORMANT SAID THAT SHE TASTED THE BREAD AND COULD NOT STAND
MORE THAN A FEW BITES BECAUSE IT WAS SO RICH.

Submitter comment:

THE INFORMANT FIRST LEARNED OF THE AMISH WHILE GOING TO A FAMILY
COTTAGE IN COLON, MICH. IN 1978. HER DESCRIPTION SOUNDS TYPICAL OF
THE CLASSIC PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH ATTIRE AND ATTITUDE. SIMPLICITY
AND KEEPING TO OLD TRADITIONS ARE INHERENT TO HER DESCRIPTION.
UPON VISITING COLON WITH THE INFORMANT, THE COLLECTOR NOTICED THE
SAME CUSTOMS. ONE HEARS ON THE NEWS ABOUT THE CURRENT PROBLEMS
WITH TEACHING, STRESSING THAT NEW DIFFICULTIES ARE ALWAYS ARISING
WITH THE AMISH.

INDIAN SWEETTOOTHS

MR. LEHR REPORTS THAT HE OFTEN HUNTS IN THE EASTERN
PART OF THE UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN. HE SAYS
THAT THE INDIANS WILL BEG FOR EVERYTHING UP THERE
AND THAT THEY WOULD RATHER HAVE CANDY BARS THAN
STEAK. HE SAYS THAT HE HAS OFTEN WALKED INTO A

HAS BEER. THEN WHEN HE HAS TO BUY HIS OWN DRINK
HE ONCE AGAIN HAS PEPSI.

ABOUT LUMBERJACKS

THE LUMBER JACK WAS A BREED ALL HIS OWN. THEY HIRED OUT TO A
LUMBER COMPANY, FOR BED AND BOARD. THE CAMP THEY STAYED IN
CONSISTED OF A COOK-SHANTY, AND A BUNK-HOUSE, WHERE THE MEN
ATE AND SLEPT. THE BUNKS WERE BUILT TWO HIGH, AND FILLED WITH
STRAW, OVER WHICH THE WORKER PUT ONE BLANKET TO SLEEP ON, AND
TWO MORE TO COVER UP WITH. I'M INCLINED TO THINK THAT THESE
BUNKS WERE THE FORE RUNNER TO WHAT WE NOW HAVE. MM
I REMEMBER MY FATHER TELLING ME THAT $30.00 A MONTH WAS THE
WAGE A MAN STARTED OUT AT. THIS WASN'T MUCH, BUT THEIR
BOARD AND BED WERE FREE. CONSIDERING THAT A PAIR OF PANTS
WERE SOMETHING LIKE A DOLLAR AND A PAIR OF SHOES WERE LIKE
TWO DOLLARS A PAIR, THEY THOUGHT AT THE TIME THEY WERE MAKING
GOOD MONEY. ALL WAGES EXCEPT THEIR IMMEDIATE NEEDS WERE SENT
HOME TO THEIR FAMILIES. MM
THEY WERE A ROUGH AND TOUGH SORT OF MEN, BUT THEY WERE EVER
TRUE AND STAUNCH FRIENDS TO THEIR FELLOW WORKERS. THEY WERE
ALWAYS READY TO HELP A FELLOW WORKER IN TIMES OF GRIEF AND
HARDSHIP.

Latvia

After a trip to Latvia, the informant had learned many things
about his father's country. Old ways were still a very important part
of the culture, including traditional farming techniques, the
maintenance of old family homes, male dominant roles in the family
and society, and somewhat traditional dress. In public, the men
always wore long pants, and the women wore practical dresses. The
houses were made of stone and wood, and often did not have screens in
the windows. The people were very friendly, and were willing to give
up their meager food supply for the comfort and benefit of their
American relatives.

Submitter comment: When the Skabardis family visited Latvia for a second time, they
brought their relatives many of the things that they were lacking:
screens for their windows, food, clothing, and money.
