GREEK RUINS

THERE ARE MANY RUINS IN GREECE, AND SOME ARE UNDERGROUND. FOR
EXAMPLE, ONE FAMILY'S LAND HAD VERY INTERESTING ARTICLES BENEATH. ONE
TIME SOMEONE WAS DIGGING AND CAME UP WITH WHAT LOOKED LIKE A BATHTUB,
AND IT WAS. OFFICIALS BOUGHT IT WHEN THEY DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS
PART OF A HOUSE. TODAY IT IS CALLED NESTOR'S PALACE AND BECAUSE IT IS
A NATIONAL EXHIBIT, YOU CAN SEE THE BASE OF THE MANSION WITH ANCIENT
PLUMBING AND OTHER THINGS.

Submitter comment: THIS STORY WAS ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITE ONES. THE FACT THAT IT
ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO MY NEIGHBOR, IT GAVE ME A FEELING OF EXCITE-
MENT.

AMISH COURTSHIP CUSTOM

AMISH FARMERS OF BUCKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA PAINT THEIR
GATES BRIGHT BLUE TO INDICATE THE PRESENCE OF AN UNMARRIED
DAUGHTER. THIS GIVES YOUNG MEN PERMISSION TO INTRODUCE
THEMSELVES TO THE GIRL'S PARENTS IN ORDER TO ASK THEIR
PERMISSION TO COURT THEIR DAUGHTER. IN ADDITION, AMISH
HOUSES ARE BUILT WITH A VERY SMALL WINDOW AT THE PEAK OF
THE HOUSE. THE WINDOW IS LEFT OPEN, TRADITIONALLY, SO
THAT THE YOUNG MAN MAY SECRETLY VISIT THE YOUNG LADY.
HOWEVER, THE WINDOW IS PURPOSELY BUILT TOO SMALL TO ALLOW
SUCH CLANDESTINE VISITATION.
MY MOTHER TOLD ME THAT SHE RECALLS SEEING SUCH HOUSES
IN PENNSYLVANIA DURING THE 1940'S.

Submitter comment: THE MOTHER'S NAME IS MARY MORSILLO GINGERICH, BORN
OCTOBER 3, 1937, FARRELL, PENNSYLVANIA.

Latvia

After a trip to Latvia, the informant had learned many things
about his father's country. Old ways were still a very important part
of the culture, including traditional farming techniques, the
maintenance of old family homes, male dominant roles in the family
and society, and somewhat traditional dress. In public, the men
always wore long pants, and the women wore practical dresses. The
houses were made of stone and wood, and often did not have screens in
the windows. The people were very friendly, and were willing to give
up their meager food supply for the comfort and benefit of their
American relatives.

Submitter comment: When the Skabardis family visited Latvia for a second time, they
brought their relatives many of the things that they were lacking:
screens for their windows, food, clothing, and money.
