ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL IN JACKSON, TENNESSEE USED TO BE TAUGHT BY
THE DOMINICAN SISTERS OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE. THIS NEGRO
SCHOOL HAS SINCE BEEN CLOSED.
THEY WERE HAVING A PLAY ONE DAY AND ONE OF THE BOYS NEEDED A
COAT SO THAT HE WOULD LOOK THE PART OF AN ADULT. IT WAS TIME
FOR THE PLAY AND THIS BOY HAD NOT SHOWN UP. THEY WAITED AND
WAITED, BUT HE DIDN'T COME. FINALLY, HE ARRIVED AND THE
SISTER ASKED HIM WHY HE HAD TAKEN SO LONG. HE SAID THAT
THE ONLY ONE WHO HAD A COAT WAS HIS BROTHER, AND HE HAD HAD
BAD LUCK AND AS SOON AS HE WOULD PUT ON THE COAT HE
WOULD HAVE BAD LUCK TOO, AND IT WOULD MAKE HIM MAKE A
MISTAKE WITH HIS LINES.

TACKLINA WAS PLAYED BY TWO SIDES WHO WOULD LINE UP
ON OPPSITE SIDES OF THE FIELD. THEY WOULD THEN RUN
TO THE OTHER SIDE, TRYING TO PREVENT THE OTHER SIDE
FROM DOING SO, BY TACKLING THEM. IF SOMEONE IS
TACKLED, HE BECOMES A MEMBER OF THE OTHER SIDE.
THE GAME CONTINUES UNTIL ALL HAVE BEEN TACKLED.

KICK THE CAN
PLAYED LIKE HIDE AND GO SEEK. THE BASE IS AN EMPTY
CAN. WHEN THE PERSON WHO IS IT SEES SOMEONE, HE
RUNS TO THE CAN AND SAYS "1-2-3 ON JOHNNY." ALL
THOSE CAUGHT MUST STAY BY THE CAN. IF SOMEONE WHO
IS NOT CAUGHT RUNS OUT FROM HIDING AND KICKS THE CAN
EVERYONE IS FREE AGAIN. GAME GOES UNTIL ALL ARE
CAUGHT, OR IT GIVES UP. WHEN IT WANTS TO GIVE UP,

COLLEGE TRADITION
AT BALL STATE UNIVERSITY IN INDIANA, THE FINANCIAL AFFAIRS OF THE SCHOOL HAVE BEEN GREATLY AIDED BY THE MILLIONAIRE BALL FAMILY. THE FIVE BROTHERS WERE REPRESENTED IN A MEMORIAL AREA BY FIVE STATUES AT THE TOP OF FIVE PILLARS AROUND A SMALL COURTYARD. THIS AREA WAS CALLED "BENIFICENCE" AND HAD ITS OWN TRADITION. IT WAS SAID THAT A GIRL STUDENT WAS NOT REALLY A "COED" UNTIL SHE HAD BEEN KISSED UNDER
BENIFICENCE AT TWELVE MIDNIGHT (GIRL'S DORMS LOCKED UP AT ELEVEN). AT THE TIME OF THE KISS, IF THE GIRL WAS A VIRGIN, THE STATUES WOULD ALL SMILE.

DEAD CHILD LEGEND {PREMATURE BURIAL}
IN JACKSON {MICHIGAN}, AT ONE OF OUR CEMETERIES, THERE
IS A SMALL TOMBSTONE MARKED LITTLE MARY, AND THE BIRTH
AND DEATH DATES. IT PASSED AMONG THE HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS THE STORY OF MARY'S SAD DEATH.
IT SEEMS THAT WHEN SHE WAS BURIED, SHE WAS NOT REALLY
DEAD, DUE TO THE FACT THAT SHE WAS IN A DISEASE-INDUCED
COMA. SINCE THIS WAS BEFORE THIS DISEASE WAS KNOWN, THEY
BURIED HER, THINKING HER DEAD.
THIS MUST HAVE BEEN A MISTAKE OF SOME KIND, BECAUSE
THEY SHORTLY DUG HER UP AGAIN.
THIS TIME SHE WAS REALLY DEAD, BUT SHE HAD EVIDENTLY
COME OUT OF THE COMA AND TRIED TO SCRATCH HER WAY OUT
OF THE COFFIN, BECAUSE THERE WERE SCRATCH MARKS ON THE
WOOD AND THE SHROUD WAS ALL ASKEW. MARY WAS TURNED
OVER, FACE DOWN IN THE COFFIN AND DEAD FROM SUFFOCATION
OR SHOCK, NO ONE KNOWS WHICH.
THIS STORY IS MOST OFTEN TOLD TO SOME UNSUSPECTING SOUL
WHO FINDS HIMSELF TAKEN TO A GRAVEYARD AND TOLD THE STORY
WHILE LOOKING AT LITTLE MARY'S TOMBSTONE. OFTEN TIMES
OTHER GUYS ARE HIDDEN NEARBY TO SCREAM JUST AS THE
FIRST GROUP IS LEAVING.
