THERE'S THIS GUY NAMED STADTON THAT DID A LOT OF HUNTING. HE WAS
HUNTING SQUIRRELS ONE EARLY MORNING ALONG BY A CORN FIELD. THERE
WAS A RAIL FENCE AT THE END OF THE FIELD WHERE THE SQUIRRELS
LIVED. THEY WOULD COME INTO THE CORN FIELD AND EAT THE CORN.
IT WAS BARELY DAYLIGHT AND THIS BEAR CAME ALONG. THAT BEAR WAS
PULLING OFF THOSE EARS OF CORN LIKE A MAN WOULD. HE GOT AN ARMFUL
OF THEM AND THEN WOULD GO DOWN TO A LOWER PLACE AND HEAVE THEM
INTO A BIG CYPRESS STUMP. STADTON SAID HE HAD TO GO DOWN THERE
AND SEE WHY THE BEAR WAS THROWING THEM IN THERE. STADTON WENT
AND HE SAID THE BEAR, HE HAD A HOG IN THAT THERE STUMP AND WAS
FATTENING HIM UP.

RECIPE
RECIPE FOR GERMAN POTATOE PANCAKES. INGREDIENTS: 1 AND 1/2 CUPS
FLOUR, 1/2 CUP SUGAR, 1 TSP. SALT. MIX THESE AND ADD MILK TO MAKE
A THIN LIQUID. POUR ON A HOT, BUTTERED GRIDDLE AND SPREAD PAPER THIN
TO MAKE THE PANCAKE AS LARGE AS THE GRIDDLE.
SERVE THEM HOT WITH SYRUP OR JELLY ROLLED UP INSIDE.
Submitter comment:
AS MY MOTHER GAVE ME THE RECIPE IT WAS HARD FOR HER TO NAME
EXACT MEASUREMENTS WITHOUT PROMPTING. THE RECIPE, HANDED DOWN FROM
GRANDMOTHERS AND MOTHERS BEFORE, IS KNOWN BY JUST ADDING INGREDIENTS
TOGETHER FROM GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OR USAGE, EACH PERSON JUST KNEW, FROM
PRACTICE, HOW TO MAKE THEM.

SOUP PICNIC
EVERY LABOR DAY, FOR AT LEAST FORTY YEARS, BUT NOT SINCE 1971,
THE ROHR FAMILY HELD WHAT THEY CALLED A "SOUP PICNIC." EACH INDI-
VIDUAL FAMILY WOULD BRING A PAN OF VEGETABLE SOUP, AND AT THE PICNIC
SITE (WHICH TRADED OFF FROM FAMILY TO FAMILY YEARLY) THE SOUPS WOULD
BE COMBINED IN A BIG BUTCHERING KETTLE, AND HEATED OVER AN OPEN
FIRE. THE FAMILY MADE A DAY OF IT, AND WOULD EAT THE SOUP BOTH FOR
LUNCH AND SUPPER THAT DAY.
WHEN THE CUSTOM FIRST STARTED, THE MEALS CONSISTED SOLELY OF
SOUP AND CRACKERS. AFTER A FEW YEARS, CORN ON THE COB WAS ADDED,
SINCE MANY OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS WERE GROWING IT, AND IT WAS PLENTI-
FUL DURING THE LATE SUMMER. AFTER A FEW YEARS, DESSERTS WERE ALSO
ADDED TO THE TRADITION, BUT IT WAS ALWAYS KEPT AT THAT--NEVER ANY
SIDE DISHES, OR MEAT (OTHER THAN THAT IN THE SOUP ITSELF.) (IN MY
WORDS)

SIGNIFICANCE OF SALT
WE HAVE A ROADSIDE STAND BACK HOME, AND ONE OF OUR CUSTOMERS
WANTED SOME SALT TO EAT WITH THEIR TOMATOES, RATHER THAN GIVE THEM
THE SALT, HE SOLD IT TO THEM, AND LATER TOLD ME TO NEVER GIVE SALT
AWAY, FOR IF YOU DO, YOU WILL BECOME WEAK, AND OTHER PEOPLE WILL
HAVE POWER OVER YOU. SALT THEREFORE HAS MUCH SIGNIFICANCE AND
MEANING.

CUCUMBER BELIEF
CUT A CUCUMBER AND RUB THE SMALL END AGAINST THE LARGE END.
THE BITTERNESS GOES INTO THE SMALL END, WHICH YOU HAVE TO
THROW AWAY BECAUSE IT GETS A FROTH ON IT. THIS ONLY HAS
TO BE DONE TO THE ONES PICKED AT THE FIRST OF THE SEASON.
BECAUSE THESE ARE USUALLY GREEN AND PICKED TOO EARLY.
