THERE WAS A GESTURE AT THURSTON HIGH THAT WAS USED
TO DESCRIBE STUDENTS WHO WERE CONSIDERED WEIRD.
{HOMOSEXUAL} YOU BEND YOUR WRIST AT THE JOINT AND
LET YOUR HAND HANG LIMP AND ALONG WITH THIS, YOU
LISP, "OH THAY {SAY}, FELLA."

ARMENIAN CUSTOM
IT IS AN ARMENIAN CUSTOM THAT WHEN A CHILD IS BORN, NO
MATTER WHAT THE SEX OF THE CHILD IS, IT IS NECESSARY
TO PLACE ANY KIND OF BLUE OBJECT ON THE BABY OR NEAR
THE BABY. THIS OBJECT, FOR AN EXAMPLE, COULD BE A
BEAD OR A BUTTON. IT IS THEN BELIEVED THAT THIS OBJECT
WILL KEEP ALL EVIL, SUCH AS SICKNESS, AWAY FROM THE BABY.

A BOWLER'S CRYING TOWEL WAS GIVEN TO ME ABOUT THREE
YEARS AGO. SINCE THIS TIME, I WILL NOT GO BOWLING
WITHOUT IT. IT HAS BROUGHT ME GOOD LUCK, I FEEL,
AND IN ORDER NOT TO LOSE THIS GOOD LUCK, THE TOWEL
HAS NEVER BEEN WASHED. I FEEL THAT IF I WASH IT,
THE GOOD LUCK ATTACHED TO THE TOWEL WOULD DISAPPEAR.

Historical record from James Callow Folklore Archive.
HOJAH, THE STUPID ARMENIAN, WAS RIDING A DONKEY
BACKWARDS AND HE PASSED A GROUP OF HIS FRIENDS.
THEY CALLED TO HIM, ASKING HIM WHY HE WAS SITTING

HOME!"

THE LEGEND OF STRASBURG STREET OR "KNOCK-KNOCK" STREET
SOMEONE ONCE TOLD ME A STORY ABOUT AN INCIDENT WHICH SUPPOSEDLY
OCCURRED ON STRASBURG STREET IN DETROIT. THERE WAS A TERRIBLE
ACCIDENT ON THIS STREET ONE NIGHT IN WHICH A LITTLE THREE-YEAR-
OLD GIRL WAS KILLED AND HER BODY BADLY DISMEMBERED. THE POLICE
SEARCHED THE AREA FOR HER REMAINS BUT FAILED TO LOCATE ONE OF
HER ARMS. NOW THE STORY HAS IT THAT WHEN YOU DRIVE DOWN STRASBURG
STREET AT NIGHT, IF YOU ARE VERY QUIET, YOU CAN HEAR A KNOCKING ON
THE SIDE OF YOUR CAR. FOR THIS REASON STRASBURG STREET IS KNOWN
AS KNOCK-KNOCK STREET.

THE BEGGAR WHO WAS JESUS
LONG AGO IN ARMENIA A BEGGAR WAS SEEN GOING FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE
TRYING TO GET SOME FOOD. WITH MOST OF HIS HOPE GONE, HE CAME TO THE
HOUSE OF AN ARMENIAN PRIEST AND HIS WIFE. THE WOMAN OPENED THE DOOR
AND GAVE THE BEGGAR SOME FRESH BREAD WHICH SHE WAS BAKING AT THE
HEARTH. HE THANKED HER AND ASKED HER FOR ONE MORE FAVOR. THE FAVOR
WAS THAT HE COULD GIVE HER A KISS. SHE OBLIGED. THE BEGGAR WAS
THOUGHT TO BE JESUS. WHEN HER HUSBAND CAME HOME SHE TOLD HIM WHAT
HAPPENED. HE ANSWERED HER, "FOR GOD'S SAKE, WOULD YOU JUMP IN THE
FIRE? SHE ANSWERED YES AND THREW HERSELF INTO THE HEARTH. WITHOUT
HER HE FELT THERE WAS NO REASON TO LIVE AND SO HE THREW HIMSELF INTO
THE FIRE. IT IS SAID AT THIS SPOT A SHRINE HAS BEEN ERECTED AND A
SPRING FLOWS WHICH HEALS THE SICK."

EASTER EGG FIGHTS
A CUSTOM THE ARMENIANS HAVE AND AS FAR AS I KNOW ARE THE ONLY ONES
THAT DO IS THE EASTER EGG FIGHTS. WE BOIL AND COLOR OUR EGGS JUST
LIKE EVERYONE ELSE, BUT WE ALSO SEE WHO HAS THE STRONGEST EGG BY
HITTING THE POINTED ENDS OF THE EGGS TOGETHER. THE ONE WHOSE EGG
BREAKS IS THE LOSER. I AM ALSO TOLD THAT WHEN I WAS YOUNG OLDER
MEN LIKE MY GRANDFATHER WOULD MEET ON EASTER AND WAGER DOZENS AND
CASES OF EGGS ON A SINGLE MATCH.

THE WHITE INDIAN
Historical record from James Callow Folklore Archive.
ONE DAY AN INDIAN CAME INTO THE SALOON BACK IN
THE OLD WEST. HE WAS CARRYING A SHOTGUN, A PAIL OF
MANURE, AND A CAT. HE ORDERED, DRANK, TOOK THE
SHOTGUN AND SHOT THE PAIL, AND CHASED THE CAT OUT
OF THE SALOON. THIS WENT ON FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS,
UNTIL THE BARTENDER ASKED HIM WHAT HE WAS DOING.
HE SAID, "ME WANT TO BE LIKE WHITE MAN, GO TO
SALOON, DRINK, SHOOT THE SHIT, AND CHASE PUSSY."
