These little songs were taught to informant at school by Mrs. Rosalee Gray at the Hanna School House. Every morning they would sing little verses, but they never had a music book or music to assist.

Strawberry Preserves (Prize Winning Recipe)
2 qts strawberries
6 cups sugar
4 cups sugar over strawberries till boil, get off, cool, add another 2 cups, boil hard for 5 to 10 minutes. While boiling add 1 Tb. butter (keeps off foam to win prize).
Pour shallow pans, shake (makes plump)
Set overnight.
Put sterlized jar (if berries set overnight they will not rise to top).
Melt paraffin pour over top to preserve.

Crush this till fine.
Cook vinegar and sugar on low heat (cup of each). Add whole allspice, turmeric.
Pour over, put in jars.

Making Molasses
Sugar cane, feed cane (cut, stripped; take leaves [head] off) into a mill.
Mule walks around mill to turn.
Pipe runs to pans with four areas (fire underneath pans).
Each pan gets finer (skim, gets redder). Final pan pull out stopper and runs into jars.

After gut a hog, put pan bottom and rake intestines into pan. Go to creek, get in water, split intestines. After clean out boil in water (twice). Cut in pieces, roll in eggs beaten. Roll in mean and fry in bacon fat.

Chop fine (cabbage).
Layer the cabbage kraut then cover with salt.
Do not seal just cover; kraut will begin to fizze, sour (approximately 10 days)
