FORMING MICHIGAN

ONE DAY THE INDIAN GOD WAS DRAWING THE VARIOUS LANDS ON THE GLOBE.
AND AS HE WAS TRACING ALONG, HE HAD TO LEAN ON THE LAND WITH HIS
OTHER HAND FOR SUPPORT. WELL, WHEN HE GOT DONE DRAWING AND HE
STOOD BACK TO LOOK AT HIS WORK, HE FOUND THAT HE HAD MADE A BIG
HAND PRINT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAND. WELL, THAT HAND PRINT
IS NOW THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.

Submitter comment:

THIS LEGEND WAS TOLD TO MY SISTER ONE DAY IN SCHOOL.

SLEEPING BEAR DUNES

HOW THE SLEEPING BEAR DUNES (IN NORTHERN MICHIGAN) GOT THEIR
NAME: ONCE THERE WAS A GIANT BEAR AND HER TWO CUBS, AND THEY
HAD TO SWIM ACROSS LAKE MICHIGAN TO GET SOME FOOD BECAUSE THEY
WERE STARVING. THEY SWAM AND THEY SWAM, BUT IT WAS A LONG, LONG
WAY. SO ONE OF THE CUBS COULDN'T GO ANY FURTHER AND IT SANK TO
THE BOTTOM. BUT THE MAMA BEAR AND THE OTHER CUB KEPT ON SWIMMING.
FINALLY THE OTHER CUB TIRED AND SANK TO THE BOTTOM ALSO. WELL,
THE MAMA BEAR KEPT ON COMING AND SHE FINALLY MADE IT TO THE
MICHIGAN SHORE. SO SHE JUST LAID HERSELF DOWN TO WAIT FOR HER
CUBS. WELL, THE SAND CAME AND BLEW OVER HER AND SHE IS STILL
LIVING THERE TODAY, LOOKING OUT OVER THE LAKE FOR HER CUBS. AND
YOU CAN STILL SEE THOSE CUBS TODAY, ONLY THEY HAVE BEEN COVERED
BY LAND ALSO AND THEY NOW LOOK LIKE TWO ISLANDS. WHERE THAT
MOTHER BEAR LIES IS NOW CALLED THE SLEEPING BEAR SAND DUNES.

EVERYWHERE. SOME PARTS OF HER BECAME TIRED ON THE WAY AND HAD
TO STOP WHERE THEY WERE, WITHOUT COMPLETING THE DESCENT. THESE

THE GIANT'S CAUSEWAY

THERE WAS AN IRISHMAN NAMED FINN MC COUL--HE WAS A GIANT OF A
MAN--WHO USED TO SHOUT ACROSS THE IRISH SEA TO A SCOTSMAN, DARING
HIM TO FIGHT. ONE DAY HE TOLD THE SCOTSMAN TO COME ACROSS AND
HE'D REALLY GIVE HIM A GOOD FIGHT. THE SCOTSMAN SAID HE WOULD,
BUT HE COULDN'T SWIM. SO FINN MADE A STONE CAUSEWAY ACROSS THE
IRISH SEA AND THE SCOTSMAN CAME OVER. FINN BEAT HIM, OF COURSE.

Submitter comment: THIS CAUSEWAY REALLY EXISTS. THERE IS A PATH OF HUGE STONES
JUTTING OUT INTO THE IRISH SEA, BUT NOT COMPLETELY CROSSING IT
AND IT IS CALLED "GIANT'S CAUSEWAY."

LEGEND

IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA THERE IS A LAKE CALLED "MC LAC," IN THE
MIDDLE OF WHICH IS A GLASS HILL THAT SHINES BRILLIANTLY IN THE
SUN. LEGEND HAS IT THAT THE INDIANS BUILT THIS HILL TO HONOR
THE SUN GOD. FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS THEY CARRIED THESE CRYSTAL
ROCKS OUT TO THE MIDDLE OF THE LAKE BY MEANS OF CANOES. A ROCK
WAS OFFERRED BY THE ENTIRE TRIBE WHENEVER A FAVOR WAS GRANTED
BY THE SUN GOD. THEY CONTINUED THIS RITUAL UNTIL THE HILL WAS
FAR ENOUGH OUT OF THE WATER TO REFLECT THE SUN'S GOODNESS BY
GIVING BACK ITS LIGHT.

LEGENDS OF ROGUES' HOLLOW

ROGUES' HOLLOW IS A SMALL, ISOLATED AREA OF LAND LOCATED ABOUT
TWO MILES SOUTH OF DOYLESTOWN, OHIO, WHICH HAS A GREAT DEAL OF OLD
RUMORS AND LEGENDS ABOUT IT. THE FEW LISTED HERE ARE ALL THAT I
REMEMBER HEARING, BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN YOU HEAR SOMETHING ELSE
ABOUT IT WHICH PEOPLE DECLARE TO BE TRUE ALSO. AS FAR AS I KNOW,
NONE OF THESE LEGENDS HAVE BEEN PROVEN OR DISPROVEN.
1--JESSE JAMES WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE HIDDEN OUT IN THE CAVES AT
ONE TIME
2--A MAN WHO WORKED IN A MILL IN ROGUES' HOLLOW WAS SUPPOSED
TO HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN THE WATER WHEEL AND KILLED INSTANTLY. EVER
SINCE, HE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE HAUNTED THE MILL. EVENTUALLY IT WAS
BURNED DOWN (FACT), AND THIS IS ALSO ATTRIBUTED TO THE GHOST. ONE
VERSION SAYS THAT HE DID THIS BECAUSE SOMEONE WAS GOING TO BUY IT.
3--IF YOU STAND IN A CERTAIN PLACE AT MIDNIGHT, YOU CAN HEAR
THE SOUND OF A BABY CRYING.
4--IF YOU STAND NEAR THE RAILROAD TRACKS AT MIDNIGHT, YOU CAN
HEAR THE SOUND OF A TRAIN COMING DOWN THE TRACK, THOUGH THERE IS NO
TRAIN,
5--AN OLD BEARDED HERMIT, OR HIS GHOST, LIVES IN THE COAL MINES
AND WILL TRY TO KILL ANY TRESPASSERS WITH HIS PICK.
6-- MANY MINERS WERE ONCE KILLED IN A CAVE-IN, AND THEIR GHOSTS
STILL WORK THERE TODAY.

Submitter comment: ROGUES' HOLLOW IS A POPULAR PLACE FOR FAMILIES AND SIGHTSEERS
ON SUNDAYS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE LEAVES ARE CHANGING COLOR, BUT
DURING THE WEEK, TEENAGERS MAKE UP THE BIGGEST PART OF THE CROWD.
GROUPS OF BOYS, OR BOY-GIRL GROUPS ARE THERE DAY AND NIGHT EXPLORING
THE MINES AND HOPING TO SEE SOMETHING SUPERNATURAL.
A GREAT MAJORITY OF PEOPLE DO SEEM TO BELIEVE AT LEAST A FEW OF
THE SUPERSTITIONS ABOUT ROGUES' HOLLOW, AND SOME CLAIM TO HAVE WIT-
NESSED THEM EITHER FIRST-HAND OR VICARIOUSLY. THE TWO BELIEFS ABOUT
THE BABY AND THE TRAIN SEEM TO BE THE ONES BEST KNOWN, AS WELL AS
THE ONES MOST BELIEVED.

THE FOLLOWING IS RECALLED FROM THE RESPONDENT'S CHILDHOOD ALTHOUGH
THE EXACT SOURCE LEARNED FROM IS NOT REMEMBERED:
THE "MITTEN" SHAPE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN WAS FORMED IN THE FINAL
STAGES OF GOD'S FORMATION OF THE PLANET. AFTER THE CREATOR WAS
THROUGH IN FORMING THE EARTH, HE PLACED HIS HAND ON THE SPHERES
SURFACE IN ORDER TO EXAMINE HIS WORK. WHEN THE HAND OF GOD WAS
REMOVED IT LEFT AN IMPRESSION AND RESULTED IN THE STATE'S SHAPE AND
DIMENSIONS.

JOHN C. WOBBLESQUAW

HE WAS MY FATHER,S GREAT, GREAT, GRANDFATHER ON HIS MOTHER,S SIDE.
ACCORDING TO THE LEGEND, HE BUILT MACKINAC ISLAND.
HE HAD A GIRLFRIEND ACROSS THE STRAITS, AND HE USED TO LIKE TO SEE
HER, SO HE WOULD SWIM ACROSS THE STRAITS. HE SAW LITTLE WHITE STONES
ON THE LOWER PENINSULA SIDE AND HE USED TO TAKE THEM TO HER.
NOW HE WAS A STRONG FELLOW, BUT HE TIRED WITH ALL THE STONES WHILE
SWIMMING, SO HE USED TO DUMP THEM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STRAITS.
THIS WAS A HOT ROMANCE, BUT HE COULDN,T GET ACROSS THE STRAITS WITH
SOME MORE STONES. THAT,S HOW HE BUILT MACKINAC ISLAND. BECAUSE IF YOU
GO THERE TODAY, YOU CAN SEE THE LITTLE WHITE STONES IN THE SAND.

MURDER MOUNTAIN.

THERE'S THIS HILL NEAR CHELSEA, MICHIGAN, THAT EVERYONE CALLS
" MURDER MOUNTAIN." THE WAY I HEARD IT, THERE WAS THIS YOUNG
COUPLE WHO WENT OUT THERE FOR A PICNIC IN THE MOONLIGHT. I GUESS
THEY WERE MAKING OUT OR SOMETHING, WHEN SOMEBODY OR SOMETHING
ATTACKED THEM. THERE WAS NO SIGN OF A STRUGGLE, WHEN TWO LITTLE
BOYS FOUND THEIR BODIES THE NEXT DAY. THEY WERE STILL IN AN
EMBRACE, BUT THEY WERE BLOODIED UP SOMETHING AWFUL. THE COPS NEVER
FOUND OUT WHO DID IT, BUT EVER SINCE THEN THAT HILL'S BEEN CALLED
" MURDER MOUNTAIN ". I GUESS THIS HAPPENED ABOUT 1930.

TO LIMERICK IN IRELAND. CASHEL IS A ROCK ABOUT THREE HUNDRED FEET
HIGH WITH A RUIN OF A CASTLE AND CATHEDRAL ON IT. I BELIEVE IT WAS
ONCE THE SEAT OF RELIGIOUS LEADERS BUT AM NOT SURE. I DO NOT KNOW
IF THE MAN WHO TOLD KATHY BELIEVED IT BUT KATHY DOESN'T.

INDIAN LEGEND

FROM CODY, WYOMING: ONCE THERE WAS A MEDICINE MAN WHO WAS REALLY
A GOOD GUY. THIS WHOLE TRIBE WAS IN A STATE OF MORAL DECAY,
THEY GAVE HIM A BAD TIME AND MOCKED HIM WHEN HE TRIED TO CLEAN
THINGS UP.
FINALLY HE DECIDED TO GIVE THE PEOPLE ONE LAST CHANCE. HE CALLED
ALL THE DEPRAVED INDIANS TOGETHER AND MADE A SPEECH, ASKING THEM
TO REFORM. THEY HAD ALL COME DECKED OUT IN THEIR CEREMONIAL ROBES
RED, YELLOW AND GREEN, ALL STANDING ON THE CLIFFS AROUND THE
MEDICINE MAN AS HE MADE HIS SPEECH. THEY PLANNED TO KILL HIM AS
SOON AS HE WAS FINISHED. BUT HE PULLED A FAST ONE AND TURNED ALL
OF THEM INTO ROCKS. THIS IS HOW THE PAINTED DESERT WAS FORMED.
