THE FOUNDING OF KRAKOW

ONCE THERE WAS A SETTLEMENT OF PEOPLE ON THE VISTULA RIVER NEAR
THE FOOT OF THE KARPATH MOUNTAINS. HOWEVER, THERE ALSO LIVED A
DRAGON IN A CAVE (CALLED THE JASKINIA). EVERY DAY HE WOULD COME
TO THE SETTLEMENT AND SWALLOW SOME SHEEP, AND THEN GO TO THE
VISTULA TO WASH HIS MEAL DOWN AND BACK TO HIS JASKINIA TO SLEEP.
THE PEOPLE WERE ANGRY--ESPECIALLY THE SHEPHERDS AND NOBLEMEN.
THE SHEPHERDS AND THE PEOPLE OFFERED REWARDS OF ALL SORTS TO
ANYONE WHO COULD KILL THE DRAGON. MANY GLORY-SEEKING NOBLEMEN
TRIED, BUT WERE CRUSHED. THEN A SHOEMAKER NAMED KRAKUS STEPPED
FORWARD. HE KILLED A SHEEP, GUTTED IT, AND STUFFED IT WITH
SULPHUR. THE FOLLOWING DAY KRAKUS WATCHED THE DRAGON COME FROM
HIS JASKINIA AND IN HIS PATH KRAKUS PLACED THE SHEEP.
THE DRAGON SWALLOWED THE SHEEP WITH ONE GULP AND CONTINUED AFTER
MORE SHEEP. HOWEVER, THE DRAGON FELT A BURNING THIRST AND RUSHED
TO THE VISTULA RIVER. THERE THE DRAGON DRANK AND DRANK, NOT BEING
ABLE TO QUENCH HIS THIRST. HE CONTINUED DRINKING. FINALLY, THE
DRAGON BURST AND DIED.
KRAKUS WAS HAILED BY THE PEOPLE AND MADE THE CHIEF OF THE SETTLE-
MENT. THEY TOOK HIS NAME AND DUBBED THE SETTLEMENT KRAKOW, OR THE
PEOPLE OF KRAKOW.

"METTLEN ALP LEGEND"

ONE NIGHT, ON THE METTLEN ALP, THE CATTLE WERE IN THE BARN FOR THE
NIGHT AND THE PEOPLE WERE ASLEEP IN THE LOFT, WHEN ONE OF THE MEN
HEARD A TERRIBLE NOISE DOWNSTAIRS. HE LOOKED DOWN THE STAIRS AND SAW
THREE MEN MAKING CHEESE. THERE WERE THREE COPPER KETTLES, ONE FOR
EACH MAN, WITH GREEN, RED, AND NORMAL COLORED CHEESE. THE THREE MEN
SAW THE ONLOOKER AND TOLD HIM TO COME DOWN AND MAKE A CHOICE.
IF HE WAS TO TAKE THE GREEN CHEESE, HE COULD HAVE A WHOLE ALP ALL
TO HIMSELF WITH AS MANY CATTLE AS HE WANTED. IF HE WANTED THE RED
CHEESE, HE COULD HAVE AS MUCH MONEY AS HE WANTED WHILE HE LIVED.
IF HE WAS TO CHOOSE THE NORMAL CHEESE, GOD WOULD BLESS HIM, AND HE
WUOLD NEVER HAVE ANY TROUBLE. THEY TOLD HIM TO MAKE HIS CHOICE.
HE CHOSE THE RED. EVERYTHING BUT THE RED CHEESE DISAPPEARED.
THE NEXT DAY THE OTHERS CAME DOWN, AND SAW HIM LAYING ON THE FLOOR
WITH A SACK OF MONEY. HE WAS ILL, AND THEY WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN HIM
EXCEPT FOR HIS CLOTHES BECAUSE HE AGED AT LEAST TWENTY YEARS IN THE
NIGHT. HE DIED THE SAME EVENING. THE OTHERS WERE AFRAID, SO THEY WENT
INTO THE VILLAGE BELOW AND ASKED A MINSTER (WHO WAS BELIEVED TO HAVE
SPECIAL POWER OF EXORCISM) TO COME UP AND BLESS THE ALP THAT IT MIGHT
BE SAVED. HE TOLD THEM THAT THEY MUST TAKE A ROPE, MAKE THREE NOTES
IN IT AND GO AROUND THE BORDER OF THE ALP HITTING IT AS HARD AS
POSSIBLE WITH THE ROPE. AS SOON AS THE CIRCLE CLOSED, THERE WAS A
GREAT CLAP OF THUNDER, A COLUMN OF SMOKE AND A TERRIBLE SMELL
COMING FROM THE BARN. AFTER THAT, EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL.
THIS IS SAID TO BE TRUE: SINCE THAT TIME THE PEOPLE USE THAT BARN
TO SHELTER THE CATTLE AT NIGHT, AND TO WORK DURING THE DAY, BUT NO
ONE WILL STAY IN THE BARN AFTER DARK.)

Submitter comment: "FOLK NAME"
AN ALP IS A PLATEAU IN SWITZERLAND, WHERE, DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS
THE CATTLE ARE GRAZED. THESE CATTLE ARE WATCHED BY ONE FAMILY WHO
IS PAID BY THE COMMUNITY. THIS FAMILY ALSO MAKES BUTTER, CHEESE AND
ZIGER (A VERY SPECIAL CHEESE) FROM THE MILK OF THE COWS.
THESE PRODUCTS ARE DIVIDED AT THE END OF THE SUMMER AMONG THE PEOPLE
WHOSE COWS WERE GRAZED ON THE ALP.

THE PHONE. JOANNE GOT SCARED AND WENT DOWNSTAIRS AND FOUND A LITTLE
BOTTLE OF HOLY WATER AND PROCEEDED BACK INTO THE DEN.
HOWEVER, THE MAN HAD DISAPPEARED. NEXT, JOANNE CALLED HER AUNT AND
UNCLE UP TO COME OVER TO THE HOUSE AS HER FAMILY WAS GONE AT THE
TIME. THE AUNT AND UNCLE CAME OVER ALONG WITH A BOXER DOG; WHEN
THEY WENT TO ENTER THE DEN, THE DOG REFUSED TO ENTER THE ROOM FOR
SOME UNKNOWN REASON.

POLISH DRAGON LEGEND

A LONG TIME AGO IN POLAND THERE WAS A TERRIBLE DRAGON, AND
EVERY MONTH HE FORCED THE PEOPLE TO BRING HIM A YOUNG GIRL TO
EAT. THE PEOPLE WERE VERY UPSET ABOUT THIS AND SO THEY WENT TO THEIR
KING KRAKUS AND ASKED HIM TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS DRAGON. KRAKUS
THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR A LONG TIME AND
FINALLY HE KILLED A SHEEP AND FILLED IT WITH TAR AND SULPHUR. HE
PUT THE SHEEP IN FRONT OF THE CAVE WHERE THE DRAGON LIVED AND
THE DRAGON CAME OUT AND BEGAN TO DEVOUR THE SHEEP, BUT THE TAR AND
SULPHUR BURNED TERRIBLE AND MADE HIM VERY THIRSTY. AND SO HE RAN TO
THE RIVER WISTA AND BEGAN TO DRINK, HE DRANK SO MUCH THAT HE
BECAME VERY HEAVY, FELL INTO THE WATER AND WAS DROWNED.
AND THE PEOPLE PROCLAIMED KRAKUS AS THEIR HERO, AND BUILT

When my grandmother was alive, she would always refer to the
banshees, which were spirits returning to give warnings to
the living. One afternoon when her mother was very ill back
in Ireland, the only photograph of her mother suddenly fell
off the wall and the glass shattered. It was the very same
day that her mother died and it was believed that the
Banshees used this as a warning to my grandmother.

MANY LEGENDS ARE BUILT AROUND SUPPOSED HAPPENINGS IN
CONNECTION WITH LAVA FLOWS IN THE OUTLYING ISLANDS
OF THE HAWAIIAN CHAIN. I HAVE HEARD SEVERAL VARIA-
TIONS OF THIS TALE.
ONE DAY ONE OF "THE OLD ONES" (A LEGENDARY PERSON WHO
APPEARS IN MORTAL FORM, ASKING FOR ALMS) APPEARED AT
THE DOOR OF A POOR MAN'S HUT ON THE SLOPES OF MAUNA
KEA. HE WAS GIVEN HOSPITALITY, AND WHEN IT WAS TIME
FOR HIM TO GO, HE INSTRUCTED THE POOR MAN TO PUT THREE
STONES AT THE FOUR CORNERS OF HIS LAND. THE OLD MAN
DID AS HE WAS TOLD, AND SOON AFTER, THE VOLCANO
ERRUPTED AND LAVA POURED DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, DESTROYING
EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH--BUT WHEN IT REACHED THE OLD
MAN'S LAND, IT SPLIT AND WENT AROUND. (THEY WILL
STILL SHOW YOU A NUMBER OF PLACES WHICH ARE BARE OF
LAVA AND THERE IS A VARIATION OF THE STORY TO GO
WITH EACH ONE.)
