HERSELF WITH A MUSKET IN ORDER TO WARN HIM. IN GRIEF, HE KILLS

LEGEND OF OCEAN-BORN MARY

THERE IS A HOUSE NEAR HENNIKER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, THAT IS THE SITE OF
THE LEGEND OF OCEAN-BORN MARY. THE STORY GOES THAT A SHIP OF IMMI-
GRANTS FROM ENGLAND WAS STOPPED BY PIRATES OFF THE MASSACHUSETTS
COAST. THE PIRATE CAPTAIN HEARD THE WAIL OF A BABY, AND HE
DEMANDED TO SEE THE CHILD. LEARNING THAT THE CHILD WAS UNNAMED, HE
ASKED IF HE COULD NAME IT, BECAUSE IF HE COULD, THEN NO HARM COULD
BEFALL THE SHIP. IT WAS AGREED, AND THE CHILD WAS NAMED MARY.
MARY WAS BROUGHT UP IN NEW HAMPSHIRE AND HAD FOUR CHILDREN, WHO
LIVED NEAR HER.
THE PIRATE CAPTAIN, IN HIS OLD AGE, CAME BACK TO HENNIKER TO SETTLE
AND TO BE NEAR MARY.
THE LEGEND IS THAT ONE NIGHT, THE CAPTAIN BURIED A TREASURE CHEST
NEAR THE HOUSE. MARY, WHO WAS MISTRESS OF THE HOUSE, NEVER
REVEALED THE SECRET WHEREABOUTS OF THE TREASURE AND DIED OF OLD
AGE. TODAY, PEOPLE SAY THE PLACE IS HAUNTED AND THAT EVERY SPRING
AFTER THE HEAVY RAINS, GOLD PIECES CAN BE FOUND IN THE MUD. BUT
NO ONE HAS FOUND THE CHEST.

HERO--BAD MAN STORY

THIS INFORMANT HEARD FROM A FELLOW WORKER AT THE FORD ROUGE COMPLEX
OF A BITTER FEUD BETWEEN TWO NEGROES DURING THE DETROIT RIOTS IN
THE SUMMER OF 1967.
THESE TWO NEGROES WERE NEIGHBORS IN AN INNER-CITY NEIGHBORHOOD, AND
THEY MADE A BET ABOUT WHO COULD LOOT THE MOST DURING THE RIOTS.
ONE MAN LOOTED A WHOLE HOUSE FULL OF FURNITURE AND APPLIANCES,
WHILE THE OTHER MANAGED TO PROCURE ONLY ONE SMALL RADIO AS HIS
PRIZE.
THE SUCCESSFUL LOOTER MOCKED THE OTHER SO UNMERCIFULLY ABOUT HIS
BAD LUCK THAT THE LATTER BURNED DOWN THE FORMER'S ENTIRE HOUSE,
FURNITURE AND ALL.

GREEK LEGEND

FROM ANCIENT TIMES ONWARD, IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN THAT PIGS COULD BE
TRAINED TO BECOME HOUSEHOLD PETS. IT IS SAID ALSO THAT IF PIGS
WERE KEPT LEAN AND STRONG, THEY WOULD BE CAPABLE OF SWIMMING FAIRLY
LONG DISTANCES. HISTORY RECORDS THAT THE PIRATES WHO LIVED ALONG
THE SOUTHERN SHORE OF CILICIA IN ASIA MINOR AND IN PHOENICIA WOULD
RUTHLESSLY PLUNDER THE MANY SMALL ISLANDS IN THE AEGEAN SEA. ODDLY
ENOUGH, THESE PIRATES, ALTHOUGH CONSTANTLY AT SEA, RARELY LEARNED
TO SWIM. FROM THIS GREW A LEGEND IN GREECE ABOUT THREE BOYS WHO
LIVED ON AN ISLAND IN THE AEGEAN SEA.
THEY WERE SWINEHERDS WHO EARNED THEIR DAILY BREAD AND CHEESE BY
TENDING THE PIGS OF A WEALTHY PRINCE OF THE MAINLAND. THE YOUNG
BOYS LEARNED THEIR PIGS WERE VERY CLEVER AND COULD BE TAUGHT
TRICKS. DIFFERENT PIGS LEARNED DIFFERENT TRICKS, BUT ALL THE PIGS
LEARNED ONE PARTICULAR TRICK, TO ANSWER A CALL ON THE BOYS' PIPES.
IN RETURN, THEY RECEIVED A SPECIAL FOOD TREAT.
LIFE ON THE ISLAND WAS PEACEFUL AND HAPPY, UNTIL ONE DAY A WILD
STORM BLEW A STRANGE SHIP CLOSE TO SHORE. IT WAS A PIRATE SHIP.
THE BOYS TRIED TO HIDE THE PIGS, BUT THE PIRATES FOUND THEM ANYWAY.
THE BOYS WRE SAD UNTIL ONE OF THEM REALIZED MAYBE THE PIGS COULD BE
SAVED. THE BOYS TOOK OUT THEIR PIPES AND BLEW THE SAME THREE NOTES
THEY ALWAYS DID FOR THE SPECIAL TREAT. THE PIGS HEARD AND KNEW
JUST WHAT TO DO. THEY RAN TO THE SIDE OF THE SHIP CLOSEST THE
SHORE. THE SUDDEN SHIFT IN WEIGHT MADE THE SHIP TIP TO ONE SIDE,
FIRST, JUST A LITTLE, THEN MORE AND MORE. WATER STARTED TO RUSH
IN OVER THE SIDES. THE SHIP BGAN TO SINK. THE CREW COULDN'T SWIM:
THEY FLOUNDERED IN THE WATER FOR A FEW MINUTES, THEN ALL THAT WAS
LEFT WAS A BIG RING OF BUBBLES IN THE BLUE SEA. THE PIGS SWAM
SWIFTLY TO SHORE AND THE BOYS REWARDED THEM WITH A VERY SPECIAL
TREAT.

AT FORT NIAGRA, NEAR NIAGRA FALLS, NEW YORK, I HEARD A STORY FROM
THE GUIDE. HE SAID, WHILE SHOWING US THE LONG BEDS IN THE BUNK
HOUSE, THAT THE CONDITIONS FOR THE REGULARS WERE SO POOR THAT THEY
HAD TO SLEEP ONE MAN LEANING AGAINST THE OTHER IN A LONG ROW. ONE
MAN ON THE END AT INTERVALS IN THE NIGHT WOULD YELL OUT A CALL FOR
A SHIFT, AND THE ENTIRE ROW WOULD TURN THE OTHER DIRECTION.

HAUNTED HOUSE

ABOUT SIX BLOCKS AWAY FROM ME, ON RUTLAND TWO BLOCKS SOUTH OF
GRAND RIVER, IS A LARGE BROWN BRICK HOUSE THAT HAS BEEN UNOCCUPIED
FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS. OLD-TIME NEIGHBORS SAY THAT AROUND 1935,
A MAN KILLED HIS WIFE THERE BY HITTING HER OVER THE HEAD WITH A
POKER. SHE LAY THERE DEAD FOR DAYS UNTIL SOMEONE FOUND HER. NOW,
AS EVERYONE ON THE BLOCK WILL TESTIFY, ONE CAN SEE HER GHOST LATE
AT NIGHT, WALKING FROM ROOM TO ROOM IN THE HOUSE. SOMETIMES, EVEN
DURING THE DAY TIME, YOU WILL HEAR LOUD, PLAINTIVE SCREAMS AND
CRYING, AND MORE FREQUENTLY, SOUNDS OF A MAN AND WOMAN ARGUING.
I MYSELF, AFTER OBSERVATION, HAVE HEARD STRANGE NOISES AT AND
AROUND THAT HOUSE.

NOT TOO LONG AGO IN ELMORE, OHIO, A GROUP OF DRUNK TEENAGERS
RAN INTO AND KILLED A POLICEMAN ON A MOTORCYCLE. THIS WAS
WITNESSED BY A PERSON LIVING IN A HOUSE NOT FAR AWAY. THE

MARBLES ON THE UPSTAIRS FLOOR

THE INFORMANT'S AUNT WAS BORN AND RAISED IN IRELAND. SHE HAD
MOVED TO THE U.S. BUT HAD GONE BACK TO IRELAND AFTER THE DEATH
OF ONE OF HER CHILDREN. WHEN RETURNING TO IRELAND, THEY MOVED
INTO A HOUSE IN WHICH THEY DID NOT USE THE SECOND FLOOR. RETURN-
ING ONE EVENING FROM GOOD FRIDAY DEVOTIONS IN CHURCH, THE AUNT
NOTICED A LIGHT MOVING FROM ONE END OF THE HOUSE TO THE OTHER
ON THE SECOND FLOOR. THEY THOUGHT NOTHING OF THE LIGHT AT FIRST,
UNTIL THEY REALIZED THAT THE LIGHT COULD NOT MOVE FROM ONE END
OF THE HOUSE TO THE OTHER WITHOUT GOING THROUGH A COUPLE OF
WALLS. WHEN THEY RETURNED HOME THEY QUESTIONED THE CHILDREN
ABOUT HAVING BEEN UPSTAIRS. THE CHILDREN CLAIMED THAT THEY HAD
NOT BEEN UP THERE. THE FATHER AND TWO BROTHERS WENT UPSTAIRS
TO LOOK AROUND BUT COULD FIND NOTHING. THE DOG WOULD NOT GO
UPSTAIRS. THAT NIGHT THERE WAS A TYPE OF NOISE ON THE FLOOR
UPSTAIRS. THE NOISES CONTINUED EVERY NIGHT, GETTING LOUDER AND
LOUDER AND TURNING INTO SOFT CRIES AND MOANING. THE AUNT HAD THE
HOUSE BLESSED TWICE WITHIN TWO WEEKS TO RID IT OF THE NOISE.
AFTER SOME TIME AS THE NOISE GOT LOUDER, THE PRIEST WAS AGAIN
CALLED TO BLESS THE HOUSE. THE FAMILY WENT TO TOWN AND LOOKED
UP THE HISTORY OF THE PREVIOUS OWNERS OF THE HOUSE. THEY FOUND
THAT THE HOUSE HAD ONCE BEEN OWNED BY A VERY WEALTHY MAN. THIS
MAN'S MAID WENT INSANE AND ONE DAY CHOKED THE TWO LITTLE CHILDREN
TO DEATH BY STUFFING MARBLES DOWN THEIR THROATS. UPON RETURNING
TO THE HOUSE WITH THE PRIEST TO AGAIN BLESS IT, THEY FOUND MARBLES
ON THE UPSTAIRS FLOOR. THESE MARBLES HAD BEEN MAKING THE NOISE
IN THE NIGHT. THE BODIES OF THE TWO CHILDREN HAD BEEN PLACED IN
THEIR TOY CHESTS. THESE CHESTS HAD LONG BEFORE BEEN REMOVED.

THE AXEMAN

A GROUP OF THE INFORMANT'S FRIENDS WHEN IN HIGH SCHOOL USED TO
PASS THE BLOOMFIELD ESTATES CEMETERY ON THE WAY TO SCHOOL EVERY
MORNING. EACH MORNING IN THE CEMETERY WAS A MAN WHO CARRIED AN
AXE STANDING AT HIS WIFE'S GRAVE. THE GROUP OF TEENAGERS CALLED
HIM "CHARLIE THE AXEMAN." THEY USED TO TEASE HIM EVERY MORNING
UNTIL ONE DAY ONE OF THE FELLOWS FOUND THIS AXE WEDGED THROUGH
THE HOOD OF THE CAR. THERE WAS NO FURTHER TEASING AFTER THAT.

KNOCK, KNOCK STREET

I CAN REMEMBER HEARING THIS TALE ABOUT FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.
APPARENTLY A YOUNG GIRL RETURNING HOME FROM HOLY COMMUNION
WAS STRUCK DOWN BY A HIT-AND-RUN MOTORIST. THE GIRL WAS
KILLED INSTANTLY; HER HAND, HOWEVER, WAS SEVERED FROM HER
BODY AND NEVER FOUND. LEGEND HAS IT THAT THE STREET FROM
THAT MOMENT ON HAS MADE A KNOCKING SOUND (SUPPOSEDLY THE
SEVERED HAND KNOCKING ON THE STREET).

Submitter comment: I CAN VAGUELY REMEMBER TAKING A RIDE TO THE SCENE AND ACTUALLY
HEARING SOMETHING. I BELIEVE THE NAME OF THE STREET WAS
STRASSBURG.

HAUNTED COTTAGE

THERE IS A HAUNTED COTTAGE ALONG LAKE ERIE JUST EAST OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
AN OLD GIANT OF A MAN SUPPOSEDLY LIVED THERE SOME TIME AGO. THIS MAN KILLED A
