WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK IN ORDER TO LIVE

WHY MUST PEOPLE WORK IN ORDER TO LIVE? WELL, AT ONE TIME GOD HAD
PLACED THE SKY SO NEAR TO THE GROUND THAT WHENEVER A PERSON WAS
HUNGRY AND WANTED SOMETHING TO EAT HE ONLY HAD TO BREAK ALL HE WANTED
TO EAT FROM THE LOVELY-BLUE SKY AND EAT. AFTER PEOPLE STARTED
GETTING TOO FAT AND LAZY, THEY WOULD BREAK OFF HUGE PIECES OF THE SKY
AND EAT ONLY SOME PORTIONS AND THROW THE REST ON THE GROUND AND WALK
AWAY. NOW THE LORD DIDN'T LIKE THIS. HE WANTED EVERYBODY TO HAVE
PLENTY TO EAT BUT HE DIDN'T WANT THEM TO TAKE THINGS TOO LIGHTLY;
"TAKE ONLY WHAT YOU'RE ABLE TO EAT," HE WARNED THEM. THE PEOPLE
FOLLOWED HIS ADVICE FOR A SHORT WHILE, THEN RETURNED TO WHAT THEY
WERE DOING BEFORE, BREAKING OFF MORE THAN THEY COULD EAT. THE LORD
DECIDED TO MOVE THE SKY MILES AWAY SO NOBODY COULD GET TO IT, AND IN
ORDER TO EAT, EVERY SOUL HAD TO WORK HARD AT THE LAND.

Submitter comment: I HAVE HEARD THIS STORY AS TOLD BY A REGULAR CHURCH-GOER; IT WAS TOLD
BASICALLY THE SAME.

JOHN C. WOBBLESQUAW

HE WAS MY FATHER,S GREAT, GREAT, GRANDFATHER ON HIS MOTHER,S SIDE.
ACCORDING TO THE LEGEND, HE BUILT MACKINAC ISLAND.
HE HAD A GIRLFRIEND ACROSS THE STRAITS, AND HE USED TO LIKE TO SEE
HER, SO HE WOULD SWIM ACROSS THE STRAITS. HE SAW LITTLE WHITE STONES
ON THE LOWER PENINSULA SIDE AND HE USED TO TAKE THEM TO HER.
NOW HE WAS A STRONG FELLOW, BUT HE TIRED WITH ALL THE STONES WHILE
SWIMMING, SO HE USED TO DUMP THEM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STRAITS.
THIS WAS A HOT ROMANCE, BUT HE COULDN,T GET ACROSS THE STRAITS WITH
SOME MORE STONES. THAT,S HOW HE BUILT MACKINAC ISLAND. BECAUSE IF YOU
GO THERE TODAY, YOU CAN SEE THE LITTLE WHITE STONES IN THE SAND.

or something like that.

FORMING MICHIGAN

ONE DAY THE INDIAN GOD WAS DRAWING THE VARIOUS LANDS ON THE GLOBE.
AND AS HE WAS TRACING ALONG, HE HAD TO LEAN ON THE LAND WITH HIS
OTHER HAND FOR SUPPORT. WELL, WHEN HE GOT DONE DRAWING AND HE
STOOD BACK TO LOOK AT HIS WORK, HE FOUND THAT HE HAD MADE A BIG
HAND PRINT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAND. WELL, THAT HAND PRINT
IS NOW THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.

LEGEND

AN OLD INDIAN LEGEND SAYS THAT SUGAR LOAF MOUNTAIN
ON MACKINAC ISLAND, MICHIGAN WAS MADE WHEN A PRINCESS OF OLD
WAS STRANDED ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN. ALL ATTEMPTS TO RESCUE
HER WERE NO USE, SO INSTEAD THE GODS SENT HER COMPANY, A MAN
ON A HILL BENEATH HER ON EITHER SIDE. THAT IS WHY THE MOUNTAIN
HAS ONE HIGH CREST AND TWO SMALLER CRESTS.
I HEARD THIS LEGEND FROM AN OLD GUIDE FOR THE CARRIAGE TOURS ON
MACKINAC ISLAND, MICHIGAN.

This is a Cheyenne Indian legend about Devil's Tower that I
learned when I visited Wyoming years ago. First of all, Devil's
Tower is a gigantic stump-like formation which was established as
the first national United States monument in 1906. The legend
goes as follows: Once an Indian maiden was out walking about
when a big bear carried her away to his cave. When the other
Indians arrived at the cave to save her they put the bear to
sleep. After they hurried away he woke up and began to chase
them. The Indians ran and finally came upon a place where
Devil's Tower now stands. One of the Indians always carried a
rock with him. He began to sing a song and when he finished the
rock had grown. He sang four more times and when he finished the
rock was as high as it is today and the Indians were on top of
it. When the bear arrived at the rock he kept jumping up against
it. His claws made the marks that are on the rock today. The
Indians finally killed the bear with their bows and arrows and
the rock was left standing as it is today.
