JOHN D. JEST OVER WMGS RADIO IN BOWLING GREEN, OHIO.
SHE WAS AN ORPHAN AT 5, ABUSED UNTIL 16, WHEN SHE
DECIDED TO BE A MISSIONARY. SHE HAS MOTHERED OVER
3000 YOUNGSTERS IN CHINA SO FAR. SHE WAS TELLING
THIS STORY:
SHE CAME TO THE UNITED STATES ON MISSION WORK AND
STEPPED OFF THE TRAIN. THE PORTER ASKED IF HE
COULD HELP HER WITH THE "GRIP." SHE SAID, "I
DIDN'T BRING IT WITH ME. MY MOTHER STILL HAS IT
AND IS SICK IN BED." LATER SHE FOUND OUT WHAT THE
OTHER MEANING OF "GRIP" WAS AND SHE WAS EMBARRASSED.

HERE IS ONE LEAF RESERVED FOR ME,
FROM ALL THY SWEET MEMORIALS FREE,
AND HERE MY SIMPLE SONG MIGHT TELL
THE FEELINGS THOU MUST GUESS SO WELL
BUT COULD I THUS WITHIN MY MIND,
ONE LITTLE CORNER FIND,
WHERE NO IMPRESSION YET IS SEEN
WHERE NO MEMORIAL YET HAS BEEN
OH, IT SHOULD BE MY SWEETEST CARE
TO WRITE YOUR NAME FOREVER THERE.

OPTATKE (CHRISTMAS WAFER) [OPLATKI]
A POLISH CHRISTMAS TRADITION. ON THE VIGIL OF CHRISTMAS AT DINNER
THAT EVENING, THE HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD DISTRIBUTES BREAD-LIKE WAFERS
(OPTATKE) [OPLATKI], MADE BY SISTERS OF THE CHURCH. THEY ARE MADE LIKE THE
COMMUNION WAFER, AND BLESSED BY THE PRIEST. EACH MEMBER OF THE
FAMILY RECEIVES ONE, AND THE HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD SAYS A PRAYER
AND ASKS FOR GOD'S BLESSING. HE BREAKS HIS WAFER WITH EACH MEMBER,
AND THEY IN TURN BREAK IT WITH EACH MEMBER OF THE FAMILY.

WELSH SUPERSTITION
THE WELSH BELIEVE THAT THE FIRST PERSON TO COME INTO THE HOUSE
RIGHT AFTER MIDNIGHT ON NEW YEAR'S EVE TELLS OR PREDICTS THE LUCK
THE HOUSEHOLD WILL HAVE. IF A MAN COMES IN, THE HOUSE WILL HAVE
GOOD LUCK. A WOMAN MEANS BAD LUCK.
Submitter comment:
THE REASON HE KNOWS OF THIS CUSTOM IS BECAUSE A LADY ASKS HIM TO
WALK INTO HER HOUSE EVERY YEAR AT MIDNIGHT SO THAT SHE WILL HAVE
GOOD LUCK.

LEGEND OF THE MAD MAN.
IN MY CHILDHOOD, I SPENT TWO WEEKS AT THE BOYS' CLUB CAMP
FOR FOUR CONSECUTIVE YEARS. EVERY STAY WAS OCCASIONED BY THE
RUMOR THAT IT WAS NOT SAFE TO WALK IN CAMP ALONE AT NIGHT
BECAUSE A MAN HAD ESCAPED FROM A NEARBY MENTAL
INSTITUTION OR JAIL (IT VARIED) AND
THE CONVICT DID NOT LIKE LITTLE BOYS.
