AND COVERED WITH THEM TOO. IN THE BASKET YOU WOULD PUT LITTLE ROUND

SALT AND PEPPER, HORSERADISH, KIELBASA AND HAM. YOU WOULD TAKE THIS
TO THE PARISH TO BE BLESSED AND ON EASTER MORNING IT WOULD BE YOUR

EASTER
ON EASTER DAY, THE PARENTS HID THE DYED EGGS INSIDE THE HOUSE AND
THE CHILDREN, ALL AT ONCE, SEARCHED FOR THEM. HOWEVER, THEY HAD TO
RETURN THEM AS THEY FOUND THEM TO THEIR BASKET WHICH COULDN'T BE
CARRIED ALONG. PAPA SNITCHED THE FOUND ONES FROM THE BASKETS AND
REHID THEM!

THE CARROT MARCH
ON THE NIGHT BEFORE EASTER MORNING, WHEN THE CHILDREN PUT OUT THEIR
EASTER BASKETS FOR THE EASTER BUNNY TO FILL WITH CANDY, ALL THOSE WHO
WISH TO PARTICIPATE ARE EACH GIVEN A CARROT. THESE CARROTS ARE
HELD AT CHEST LEVEL POINTED VERTICALLY. THEN THE MARCH BEGINS. THE
HEAD OF THE HOUSE LEADS FOR AWHILE AND THEN ANOTHER DESIGNATED PARTY.
THE PARTICIPANTS WALK IN SINGLE FILE, FOLLOWING THE LEADER
WHEREVER HE GOES. A CHANT IS SUNG BY ALL PARTICIPANTS. IT GOES--
"OREO--OREO" IN A DEEP VOICE.

EASTER EGG TRADITION
AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER, WE USED TO RECEIVE EASTER EGG BASKETS
FULL OF EGGS AND CHOCOLATE. THE CHILDREN WOULD BANG THE HEAVY
END AGAINST EACH OTHER'S EGG AND IF YOU CRACKED THE OPPONENT'S EGG,
IT WAS YOURS TO KEEP. SOME OF US WOULD EVEN DRAIN ONE EGG AND STUFF
IT WITH A HEAVY MATERIAL SUCH AS SAND OR BRICK MORTAR. IN THIS WAY,
OUR SHELL WOULD NOT BREAK AND YOU COULD WIN ALL THE OTHER EGGS.
HOWEVER, SOMEONE ALWAYS BECAME AWARE OF THIS AND YOU WOULD BE
CAUGHT RED-HANDED.

Informant and collector are the same person. He recalls doing this in the late 1940s.
