EPIPHANY-JANUARY 6

FOR UKRAINIANS VARIOUS EVENTS ARE COMMEMORATED ON THIS
DAY WHICH IS ALSO CALLED "THEOPHANY" OR MANIFESTATION. IT
CELEBRATES THE BAPTISM OF CHRIST AND THEREFORE WATER IS
BLESSED IN THE CHURCHES. THE BLESSING FOLLOWS THE MASS
WHEN THE PRIEST SUBMERGES THREE SETS OF THREE LIGHTED
CANDLES. A CRUCIFIX IS ALSO MOVED THROUGH THE WATER IN
THE FORM OF A CROSS. THE PEOPLE FILL THEIR JARS WITH HOLY
WATER TO BRING HOME. EACH PERSON DRINKS SOME HOLY WATER
AND SOME IS POURED INTO THE HOLY WATER FONTS. IN THE WEEKS
FOLLOWING EPIPHANY, THE PASTOR VISITS THE HOMES OF HIS
PARISHONERS TO BLESS THEM. THE HOLY WATER IS ALSO USED FOR
BLESSING FARMS, CATTLE, AND CROPS. ON SPECIAL FEAST DAYS,
THE CHURCH ALSO BLESSES FRUIT, FLOWERS, AND FOOD. IT IS ALSO
USED IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS.

Submitter comment: TO UKRAINIANS ALL BODIES OF WATER SUCH AS LAKES, RIVERS,AND
PONDS WERE CONSIDERED HOLY. THE BLESSING OF WATER IN THE
UKRAINE TOOK PLACE AT THE EDGE OF THE RIVER NOT IN THE
PARISH CHURCH.

HONEY-ANCIENT FOOD OF UKRAINE

ONE OF THE BASIC INGREDIENTS AND MOST BENEFICIAL FOOD FOR
UKRAINIANS IS HONEY. THE HONEY WAS CONSIDERED MEDICINAL AND
WAS GIVEN TO THE ELDERLY, THE SICK AND BABIES. MANY OF THE
UKRAINIAN RECIPES INCLUDE HONEY AS A BASIC INGREDIENT. THE
HOLIDAYS ALWAYS INCLUDE HOMEMADE BAKED GOODS. HONEY WAS
USED IN HONEYCAKE, KUTIA FOR CHRISTMAS AS SYRUPY HONEY AND
WHEAT, AND MIXED WITH THE FILLINGS OF NUT ROLLS AND POPPY
SEED ROLLS TO MAKE THEM MOIST AND SWEET. CERTAIN FANCY, RICH
CAKES CALLED TORTES ALSO INCLUDE HONEY WITH CREAM, BUTTER,
NUTS AND FLAVORINGS. EVEN TODAY, UKRAINIANS ARE LARGE
CONSUMERS OF HONEY FOR ALL OF THE ABOVE REASONS.

BARBERSHOPS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE CLOSED ON MONDAYS BY
LAW IN LEBANON. A BARBER HAD A CUSTOMER, ILLEGALLY,
ONE MONDAY, AND WAS PREPARING TO GIVE HIM A SHAVE. WHEN
THE BARBER SAW A POLICEMAN COMING TOWARD THE SHOP,
HE HASTILY THREW A SHEET OVER THE STARTLED CUSTOMER.
WHEN APPROACHED BY THE POLICEMAN AND ASKED IF HE WAS,
INDEED, WORKING, THE BARBER REPLIED NO. WHEN ASKED WHAT
THE CUSTOMER WAS DOING IN THE CHAIR, THE BARBER REPLIED
THAT HE WAS SOAKING HIM FOR THE NEXT DAY.

In Peru summer begins in January and goes until March.
January is also the beginning of Lent, which begins
the Carnival that lasts the entire summer. During the
Carnival there is throwing of water balloons and sometimes
eggs. It is really quite dangerous to go out walking during
this time, unless you would like to get attacked by water
balloons.

On the feast of St. Barbara (Dec.4), artillerymen wear
red socks.

Submitter comment: Ray was not sure how this custom came into being, but says
that St. Barbara is the patron saint of artillerymen. Perhaps
because she is the saint to be prayed to for protection from
lightening and fire, the artillerymen feel that she has an
affinity with the explosive power of their weapons.

OPPOSITES DAY

IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, A POPULAR THING TO DO IS DECLARE AN
OPPOSITES DAY. ONCE DECLARED, ANY INSULT DIRECTED AT A PERSON
WAS REVERSED. IF BILLY SAID ERIC WAS MEAN, AND ERIC DECLARED
OPPOSITES DAY, IT WAS AS IF BILLY HAD SAID THAT ERIC WAS NICE.
THIS IS OFTEN USED IN THE MIDDLE OF HEATED ARGUMENTS.
KIDS CAN USE THIS TO REVERSE PERSONAL INSULTS: "YOU ARE STUPID",
"YOU ARE UGLY"; AND PHYSICAL INSULTS: "YOUR CLOTHES DON'T
MATCH", "YOUR MAMMA WEARS ARMY BOOTS."

It was a custom that during the wakes for the departed that
were always held at a house the women would sit in the living
room with the body and cry and pray while the men sat in the
kitchen. They (the men) would eat, drink and make merry.

Homecoming Parade

Every year during football season, my high school celebrates
Homecoming with a big parade. All the grade schools, middle schools,
and other high schools are represented by floats, bands, and marching
people. Area organizations, such as the Lion's Club,
are also represented. At the end of the parade, all of the
participants and observers meet at the school for a tailgate party,
and then go to the football game.
