THE BONES

THE BONES ARE A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT. THEY LOOK LIKE RIB BONES
AND ARE ABOUT 6 INCHES LONG. A GUY WOULD PLACE THREE OF THEM
BETWEEN HIS FINGERS AND CLICK THEM TOGETHER TO MAKE SOUNDS.

Submitter comment: THE BONES COME FROM INDIANA AND WERE FOUND ANYWHERE THERE WAS
MUSIC. THEY WERE USUALLY CURVED, BLACK IN COLOR, AND USED TO KEEP
TIME THE WAY WE USE A DRUM TODAY. THE INFORMANT SAID THAT SOME
PEOPLE WERE SO GOOD AT IT THAT "YOU COULD TELL WHAT SONG HE WAS
PLAYING JUST FROM THE BONES."

TAMBURITZA IS THE FOLK MUSIC OF THE AREA NOW KNOWN AS
YUGOSLAVIA. THE TAMBURITZA ORCHESTRA IS COMPOSED OF FIVE
STRING INSTRUMENTS CALLED THE PRIMA, BRACH, CHELO,
BUGARIJA, AND BASS. THE PRIMA IS EQUIVALENT TO THE SOPRANO AND
ALTO VOICES OF A CHOIR. ALONG WITH THE PRIMA, THE BRACH
PLAYS MELODY AND HARMONY, BUT IT HAS A DEEPER SOUND EQUIVALENT
TO THE TENOR AND BASS VOICES. THE CHELO PLAYS A COUNTER-
MELODY, AND THE BUGARIA AND BASS COMPRISE THE RHYTHM SECTION.
IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, SEVERAL ORCHESTRAS HAVE
BEEN ORGANIZED, ESPECIALLY AMONG THE YOUTH. MOST OF THE
CHILDREN'S GROUPS BELONG TO THE CROATIAN FRATERNAL UNION
JUNIOR CULTURAL FEDERATION. THE FEDERATION HOLDS YEARLY
FESTIVALS IN WHICH ALL OF THE ORCHESTRAS MEET AND PERFORM
TOGETHER. ADULT GROUPS HOLD YEARLY EXTRAVAGANZAS FOR THE
SAME PURPOSE.

Music

The article studies three historical traditions of the banjo, the folk, minstrel popular, and classical.

Traditions of the banjo are characterized by:

a) The ways in which knowledge of the banjo was transmitted.

b) Closeness of the performer or craftsman to his audience or clientele

c) Self-perceived relation between the craftsman or musician to other crafstmen or musicians.

Exact origins of banjo unknown. Possible from West Africa with slaves.

Earliest banjo was made from a gourd.

Frets introduced in the 1860's and 70's

Peak of development (quality) in 1920's
