FISHING BELIEF
THE ALASKAN INDIANS HAVE A PECULIAR WAY OF KNOWING WHEN TO FISH FOR
SALMON. THEIR SHAMAN, A TYPE OF MEDICINE MAN, GOES TO THE TOP (OF)
THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN AND PRAYS TO THE SEA. WHEN HE SEES A SCHOOL
OF BELUGA WHALES SWIMMING CLOSE TO THE SURFACE NEAR SHORE, HE
RETURNS TO THE VILLAGE AND TELLS THE TRIBE THAT THEY CAN NOW GO
TO THE RIVERS AND CATCH ALL THE SALMON THAT THEY WILL NEED FOR THE
WINTER. IF THEY BEGIN CATCHING SALMON BEFORE THIS, IT WILL BRING
BAD LUCK ON THE VILLAGE.

BAD LUCK OMENS
IN SOME PARTS OF IRELAND TO MEET A PIG AT NIGHT IS A SIGN OF BAD
LUCK, BECAUSE AT NIGHT PIGS CARRY EVIL SPIRITS IN THEIR BODIES.
ONE FARMER HAD A GRUDGE AGAINST HIS NEIGHBOR, JACK TADG. ONE NIGHT
AS JACK TADG WAS COMING HOME FROM THE PUB, HIS NEIGHBOR LET OUT THE
PIG ACROSS THE ROAD, RIGHT IN FRONT OF JACK TADG. JASUS, SAID
JACK TADG, AND BAD LUCK TO YOUR MASTER AND ALL HIS KIND. AT THAT
MOMENT A CAR SPED AROUND THE CURVE OF THE ROAD, HITTING JACK TADG
AND THROWING HIM RIGHT UP ON TOP OF THE PIG. MOST HOLY MOTHER OF
GOD, HE ROARED, AMN'T I TORMENTED FROM HIM LONG ENOUGH TO HAVE ONLY
ONE BAD LUCK AT A TIME. THE TWO BAD LUCKS WERE MEETING THE PIG AND
GETTING HIT BY THE CAR.

MY GRANDMOTHER WOULD NEVER ALLOW YELLOW CATS INTO THE
HOUSE. THEY WERE TO REMAIN IN THE BARN. TIGER CATS,
BLACK CATS, WHITE CATS, THESE ALL HAD THE HOPE OF BEING
HOUSEHOLD PETS. STRICT APARTHEID WITH YELLOW CATS--TO
THE BARN! IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE BELIEF THAT THEY
WOULD BRING MISFORTUNE ON THE HOUSEHOLD. ON THE OTHER
HAND, MY FAMILY ONCE LIVED NEXT DOOR TO A FAMILY ORIGINALLY
FROM THE VERY RURAL PARTS OF KENTUCKY. MRS. PATTON COLLECTED
EVERY YELLOW CAT SHE COULD FIND AND CLAIMED THEY PURRED
LOUDER THAN OTHER CATS AND BROUGHT MORE CHEER TO A HOUSE.
WE OFTEN HEARD HER CRY, "YELLER CAT, HERE YELLER CAT"
FROM HER FRONT PORCH, AND WE WERE GLAD THAT MY GRANDMOTHER
AND MRS. PATTON NEVER LIVED NEAR EACH OTHER.
Submitter comment: TOLD TO ME BY MY NEIGHBOR.
