THE XHOSA TRIBE OF SOUTH AFRICA HAD AN INITIATION
RITE INVOLVING CIRCUMCISION. WHEN A BOY REACHED FIFTEEN,
HE WAS TO BE CIRCUMCISED TO BRING HIM TO MANHOOD. THE
CIRCUMCISION WAS DONE WITH AN ASSEGAI (A WOODEN SPEAR)
AND THE FORESKIN WAS THEN PUT IN AN ANTHILL TO BE
DEVOURED BY THE ANTS, SYMBOLIZING HIS DIMINISHING BOYHOOD.
HE THEN SPENT SEVEN DAYS IN A SMALL LODGE BY THE ANTHILL
WITH THE OTHERS PARTICIPATING IN THE RITE. AFTER THE SEVEN
DAYS, THE MEN EMERGED FROM THE LODGE, BURNED IT DOWN, AND
DID SEVERAL RITUALISTIC DANCES TO SHOW THAT THEY WERE NOW
MEN.

When you find a wooly caterpillar in the
summer you should always pick it up and look
at it because it will foretell the weather
that coming winter. There is a black band
around its middle. If the band is pretty
small there will be a mild winter. But the
larger the band the more harsh and the longer
the winter will be.

Submitter comment: Marty swears that this always works. He didn't
know if there was any biological truth to this.

There were so many roaches in the house that they took over
the basement and you had to pay a toll to wash your clothes.

Submitter comment: My mother told me that times were hard coming up; therefore
they just made fun of the problems they had. She really didn't
have any stories to tell that may have been passed down to her
mother because both her parents worked and didn't have time to
tell them. So the kids would make up jokes to help them laugh
about the conditions they lived in.

Lady Bug

If a lady bug landed on you, you would say this little verse
and blow it off your hand. If it flew away out of sight, without
landing, her children were safe.
Lady Bug, Lady Bug
Fly fast away
Your house is on fire
And your children astray.
