UPPER PENINSULA, MICHIGAN

THE ROCKS ON THE UPPER PENINSULA ARE CONSIDERED SACRED AND
HAUNTED. THE INDIANS BELIEVED THIS BECAUSE NOTHING LIVES THERE
AND THE VEGETATION IS SPARSE. THE INDIANS ALSO FEARED THIS PLACE
BECAUSE LIGHTNING STRUCK THE ROCKS SO OFTEN.

Submitter comment: MIKE LEARNED THIS FROM HIS RELATIVES.

MY BROTHER AND I USED TO HAVE A TOY BOWLING SET
BACK IN THE LATE 60s. SINCE WE WERE ONLY TODDLERS
WE WERE BOTH AFRAID OF THE NOISE MADE WHEN THE BALLS
STRUCK THE PINS. WE QUICKLY OUTGREW OUR CHILDISH
FEARS OF BOWLING, BUT WE WERE BOTH SCARED OF THUNDER.
MY FATHER THEN SAID NOT TO WORRY BECAUSE IT WAS
REALLY GOD BOWLING AGAINST THE DEVIL AND WHENEVER
GOD ROLLED A STRIKE THERE WAS THUNDER. I ALWAYS
THOUGHT ABOUT THAT AND SLEPT BETTER.

Submitter comment: THIS INFORMANT KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT.
MY PARENTS TOLD ME THIS WHEN I LIVED IN ROSEVILLE.
THEY MADE IT UP IN ROSEVILLE, MICHIGAN.

MARY COLE'S WORRY

ONCE AN OLD NEGRO WOMAN LIVING NEAR MY GRANDPARENTS'
HOME CAME RUNNING OVER TO THEIR HOUSE DURING A VIOLENT
THUNDERSTORM. SHE WAS AFRAID THAT THE THUNDERSTORM
WOULD KILL EVERYBODY IN THE HOUSE TO GET HER HUSBAND,
A NOTORIOUS LOAFER. MY GRANDMOTHER EXPLAINED TO HER,
"MARY, THE LORD JUST DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY. IF HE
WANTS WILL, HE'LL TAKE WILL, BUT HE'LL LEAVE THE
REST OF YOU."

VALVE USE APPLICATION

IN 1932 THERE WAS A TEERIBLE STORM IN POLAND. ABOUT
30 PEOPLE RAN IN A BARN TO TAKE COVER. AFTER A
COUPLE MINUTES, LIGHTENING STRUCK THE BARN AND TWO
PEOPLE WERE DEAD, AND THE REST WERE UNCONSCIOUS
EXCEPT FOR ONE MAN. THE ONE MAN PROCEEDED TO CARRY
THE PEOPLE OUT, ONE BY ONE, AND PLACE THEM IN A
NARROW DITCH AND COVERED THEM WITH A SHOVEL OF DIRT.
SEVERAL MINUTES LATER, THE PEOPLE WERE REVIVED.

Submitter comment: INFORMANT WITNESSED THIS ENTIRE PROCEDURE FROM A
DISTANCE, WHEN HE WAS A BOY (10 OR 12 YEARS OLD). HE WAS
TOO FAR AWAY TO BE OF HELP, ALSO. IT WAS TERRIBLY
MUDDY AND HE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REACH THE
PEOPLE IN TIME. INFORMANT NOW THINKS THAT WHENEVER
YOU'RE IN A FIELD AND LIGHTENING STARTS THAT YOU
SHOULD COVER YOURSELF WITH DIRT AS A RESULT FROM
HIS EXPERIENCE.

THE STORY OF LIGHTNING AND THUNDER

IN THE OLDEN DAYS, THUNDER AND LIGHTNING LIVED ON
EARTH AMONGST MANKIND, BUT THE KING MADE THEM
LIVE AT THE FAR END OF TOWN, AS FAR AS POSSIBLE FROM
THE PEOPLE'S HOUSE.

CHARGE ABOUT BURNING HOUSES AND KNOCKING DOWN TREES;
HE EVEN DID DAMAGE TO THE FARMS, AND SOMETIMES
SOMETHING IS MISSING AT THIS POINT IN STORY

SPOOKY LEGEND

THE STORY CONCERNS A BLIND GIRL AND HER DOG. THE GIRL WAS HOME ALONE
ONE NIGHT WITH HER DOG. IT WAS ABOUT 10 P.M. AND OUTSIDE THE WIND WAS
BLOWING FIERCELY. THUNDER COULD BE HEARD IN THE DISTANCE. THE GIRL
IS LISTENING TO HER RADIO WHEN SUDDENLY A NEWS BULLETIN INTERRUPTS
THE PROGRAM. THE ANNOUNCER TELLS OF A STRANGE MONSTER SIGHTED IN THE
AREA. HE WARNS THE LISTENERS TO BE PARTICULARY CAUTIOUS. SUDDENLY
THE GIRL HEARS HER DOG BARKING FEROCIOUSLY COMING FROM THE DIRECTION
OF THE BATHROOM. HE STOPS BARKING AS INSTANTLY AS HE STARTED. THE
GIRL MAKES HER WAY TO THE BATHROOM, WHERE FOR SOME UNEXPLAINABLE
REASON, SHE STICKS HER HANDS INTO THE BATHROOM SINK. THERE SHE FEELS
THE DOG'S HEAD LAYING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SINK.
