WHEN WE WERE LITTLE AND USED TO GO SWIMMING IN LAKE HURON
MY MOM WOULD WARN US NOT TO GO OUT TOO FAR IN THE WATER OR
THE GHOSTS OF PIRATES THAT DROWNED IN SHIPWRECKS WOULD DRAG
US UNDER THE WATER AND WE WOULD NEVER BE HEARD FROM EVER
AGAIN.

Whenever my sister and I were driving in the car she
would always hold her breath and pick up her feet
as we drove by a cemetery. Finally I asked why she did
this and her response was that if you didn't the
spirits of all the dead people would haunt you forever.

Twenty years ago at Central Michigan University, a girl
mysteriously died in her dorm room. The university had a
problem with kids moving out of the dorm because of the
incident, so they changed the numbering in the dorm. Now
people complain of lights, radios and televisions that are
on when they come back from class because they know they
had turned them off before they left.

Bloody Mary
At slumber parties we always used to hear from at least
one person a story about Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary was
supposed to be seen by a person who stood in front of
a mirror, in the dark. The designated person would
stand in front of a mirror anywhere in the house and say
bad things about Bloody Mary. The person would call her
name and say things like "Show yourself Bloody Mary,
or are you too scared?" The person would also call her
names or even swear at her. If the person got Bloody
Mary angry enough, she would appear in the mirror and
cause an injury to the person who had called her.

A few people that I knew had enough nerve to do this.
Even though two of the people that did were unaffected,
three of the people I know who tried this came out with
severe scratches on both of her arms, and one also
had severe scratches on her throat.

There have been many stories of ghost battles in various
countries, among them in England. With the Battle of Edge
Hill between the Royalists and the Roundheads (King Charles
v. Oliver Cromwell) in 1642, there came stories of the battle
being recreated by ghosts. There were also reports of ghost
armies fighting against the Germans in WW1. No one seems to
know why or how they occur to happen when and where they do.

On several occasions my grandmother claims to have had drawers
of silverware spill themselves in her house after a funeral for
one of her friends or relatives. She claims that this was the
way of the deceased spirit to say that the funeral was

In some small towns of Greece, it is believed that if an owl
appears at a house at night and "sings" someone in that house will
die.
Submitter comment:
My informant holds this superstition above all other
superstitions she believes in because when she was twelve she saw an
owl in her yard at some point in the evening and some weeks later her
mother became deathly ill. One year after that it is said that an owl
was seen on their rooftop and some months later her father passed
away.

There was never a fear of ghosts since they would only come
back to warn you if another family member was in peril and to make
sure you either called or wrote to make sure everyone was okay. It
was the only thing that the ghost could do was to stand there but
if you were afraid and ran the ghost would float until it caught
up with you and ride your back to where you were going, then
disappear.

My sister kept complaining that she was afraid to sleep in her
room at night because she was seeing a ghost in it if she was to
wake up during the middle of the night. My mother went and found a
horseshoe and nailed it up above my sister's door frame with the
intention that if the ghost would try and come into her room again
it would hit its head on the horseshoe and go away.

Death Owl
There's an old belief down South that when a person has been
gravely ill for a period of time or near death, an owl would come
to call for their spirit. The owl would perch on the ill person's
porch, window sill, or tree near the person's home. Exactly one
day later, the ill person would die. The owl was called a squench
Owl, because of the sound that he made during his visit. He would
appear in the late evening. No one knew where he came from or when
he left. People would try to run the owl away to keep the person
from dying and the owl from taking their love one's spirit, but the
owl would only move to another spot and continue to make squenching
sounds and leave like he came. The people were very afraid of this
owl because he brought death.
