STORY OF ST. SEVERA

ABOUT THE WAX FIGURE OF THE LITTLE GIRL IN THE MAIN
CHURCH--IT IS A FIGURE OF ST. SEVERA, MARTYRED IN ROME
IN THE YEAR 269. HER TOMB WAS DISCOVERED IN 1730 IN A
VERY OLD CEMETERY ON THE VIA SALARIA. THE INSCRIPTION
ON HER TOMB DID NOT GIVE TOO MUCH INFORMATION, BUT
WAS ENOUGH TO BE THAT OF AN AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN
MARTYR. HER BONES WERE GATHERED IN A LITTLE BOX,
BROUGHT TO THIS COUNTRY, AND PRESENTED TO NOTRE DAME
IN 1867 BY BISHOP HAILANDIERE OF VINCENNES. NOTHING
IS KNOWN OF HER LIFE OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT SHE
WAS PUT TO DEATH FOR HER FAITH. THE BOX CONTAINING HER
BONES AND ASHES WAS PLACED AT THE HEAD OF THE WAX
FIGURE WHICH LIES UNDER THE GLASS INCLOSED ALTAR OF
THE RELICS IN ONE OF THE SIDE CHAPELS OF SACRED
HEART CHURCH.

Each year it is a known tradition that all freshmen must
be "laked" on their birthday. Laking includes a group of
around twenty guys that first smear shaving cream on the
birthday boy. He is then led down to St. Mary's Lake
where he receives his birthday swim. The tradition ends
with a goodnight song to the girls in Lewis Hall, and a
mass mooning from all the guys involved in the laking
event.

3 MEN AT HOTEL RIDDLE

Q: THREE MEN WENT TO A HOTEL AND RENTED A ROOM. THE MANAGER CHARGED
THEM 30.00 DOLLARS $10.00 APIECE. THE ROOM WASN'T THAT GOOD SO THE
MANAGER DECIDED TO RETURN $5.00, TO SPLIT AMONG THE THREE MEN. THE
BELLBOY WAS SENT WITH THE MONEY AND ON THE WAY HE DECIDED TO KEEP
$2.00 AND GIVE THEM $3.00, $1.00 APIECE. THEREFORE, THEY EACH PAID
$9.00. BUT 9X3=27 AND 27+2>29. WHERE'S THE OTHER DOLLAR?
A: THAT'S THE WRONG WAY TO FIGURE IT OUT. THE MANAGER HAS $25.00.
25+5=30

James Callow comment: THE PATRONS HAVE $1 EACH=$3; THE BELLBOY HAS $2. TOTAL $30

WINDOW IN THE DOGGIE JOKE

THERE WAS AN ECCENTRIC OLD LADY WHO HAD A LITTLE DOG
THAT SHE LOVED VERY MUCH AND JUST DOTED ON. THE DOG WAS
GETTING OLD AND HADN'T BEEN FELLING WELL, SO THE LADY TOOK
IT TO THE VET. THE DOCTOR TOLD HER THAT THE DOG HAD A
WEAK HEART AND WOULDN'T BE AROUND MUCH LONGER. HE SAID
HE JUST HAD A DOG WHO DIED AND SUGGESTED A HEART TRANSPLANT.
THE LADY CONSENTED AND THE DOCTOR WAS REALLY EXCITED
BECAUSE THIS WAS A FIRST--A HEART TRANSPLANT IN A DOG. THE
LADY WAS WATCHING THE DELICATE OPERATION AND THE SKILLFUL
DOCTOR ASKED THAT SINCE HE WAS ALREADY OPERATING, COULD
HE PUT A WINDOW IN THE DOG SO THEY COULD WATCH THE NEW
HEART WORK. THE LADY BEGAN TO WORRY ABOUT MONEY, BUT
CONSENTED ANYWAY.
FINALLY SHE GOT SO WORRIED ABOUT THE COST OF THE OPERATION
AND EVERYTHING THAT SHE THOUGHT SHE {HAD} BETTER INQUIRE
ABOUT IT. SHE ASKED THE DOCTOR, "HOW MUCH IS THAT WINDOW
IN THE DOGGIE?"
