WEREWOLF

THERE ARE TWO DIRT ROADS WHICH INTERSECT
JUST OFF OF HIGHWAY 49, ABOUT FIVE MILES
SOUTH WEST OF SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE,
WHICH IS CALLED WEREWOLF JUNCTION. SEVERAL
TIMES FAMILIES WHO LIVE AND FARM IN THIS
AREA HAVE SAID THAT THEY HAVE HEARD STRANGE
NOISES AROUND THIS PARTICULAR AREA. THEY
HAVE BEEN ATTRIBUTED TO A BELLOWING COW
OR PEACOCK, BUT THIS HASN'T BEEN VERIFIED.

ANN: ABOUT PUTTING A SPELL ON PEOPLE?
THE FIRST TIME I WAS MARRIED, I FELT LIKE
SOMETHING UNDER MY SKIN CRAWLING. I'D HEAR
BELLS AND TRAINS AND AROARING IN MY HEAD.
I'D PULL THE CURTAINS DOWN AND I'D WAKE
UP AND NOT KNOW WHAT I'D DONE. THEN WHEN
I'D COME TO SPRINGFIELD FROM PORT ROYAL
I'D FEEL BETTER.
ANN: YOU WERE LIVING IN PORT ROYAL THEN?
LOUISE: YES, DADDY TOOK ME TO THE DOCTOR
AND HE GAVE ME SOME OIL, SOME CASTOR OIL,
EVERY THIRTY MINUTES. SO I DID TAKE HIT.
ANN: THEN YOU WENT BACK TO PORT ROYAL AND THE
GIRL--WHAT HAPPENED?
LOUISE: I KNEW SHE WAS RUNNING AROUND WITH
MY HUSBAND, SO I WAS RUNNING AROUND TOO.
THE GIRL, SHE WAS PREGNANT AND SHE DIED
CAUSE SHE TRIED TO DESTROY THE BABY AND I GOT
ALL RIGHT.
ANN: WHO PUT THE SPELL ON YOU?
LOUISE: MAYBE THE GIRL OR SOMEONE ELSE. BUT
I KNOW AFTER SHE DIED I GOT ALL RIGHT.

ANN: TELL ME THE ONE ABOUT THE JUDGE.
BRUCE: THREE CLERGY WERE TAKEN BEFORE THE
JUDGE ON CHARGES OF GAMBLING. THE FIRST,
A PRIEST, WAS ASKED BY THE JUDGE IF HE'D
BEEN GAMBLING. "NO, I WASN'T"
AS HE WALKED AWAY FROM THE BENCH, "FORGIVE
ME FATHER FOR THIS SMALL FIB." THE SECOND,
A PROTESTANT MINISTER, WAS ASKED BY THE JUDGE
IF HE HAD BEEN GAMBLING. "NO, I WASN'T,"
ANSWERED THE MINISTER. THEN HE SAID QUIETLY
AS HE WALKED AWAY FROM THE BENCH, "FORGIVE
ME FATHER FOR THIS SMALL FIB." THE THIRD ONE,
THE RABBI, WAS ASKED IF HE'D BEEN GAMBLING.
HIS REPLY WAS SIMPLY, "WHO WITH?"

AND STARTED SLICING IT.
"IS THAT ENOUGH?" HE SAID. "KEEP SLICING,"
SHE SAID. AFTER HAVING SLICED ALMOST HALF
OF THE LARGE CORNED BEEF, HE ASKED AGAIN IF
THAT WAS ENOUGH. "KEEP SLICING," SHE SAID.
FINALLY SHE ASKED THE BUTCHER TO STOP
