CATS AND DEATH
IN ROCKWOOD, WHEN I WAS A LITTLE BOY, THE LAUDS (LANDS?)
FAMILY USED TO BE OUR NEIGHBORS. WELL, MR. LANDS DIED.
YOU KNOW BACK THEN THEY ALWAYS KEPT THE BODY IN THE
HOUSE FOR ABOUT A WEEK. WELL, THEY KEPT MR. LANDS'
BODY SO LONG, IT STARTED TURNING BLACK. WELL, THE LANDS
HAD A WHOLE BUNCH OF CATS. YOU KNOW THEY SAY CATS TRY
TO GET ON A DEAD BODY AND SCRATCH IT. THOSE CATS GOT
INTO THAT CASKET ONE NIGHT AND THEY CAUGHT THEM JUST
IN TIME. THOSE CATS WOULD GET UP ON THE SCREEN WINDOW
RIGHT NEXT TO THE BODY AND TRY TO GET IN.

CRANBERRY SCOOP
CRANBERRY SCOOP PICTURES SEE SQ692406-3 TO SQ692406-7
Submitter comment:
THE CRANBERRY SCOOP WAS USED IN THE HARVESTING OF CRANBERRIES. THE
ONE PICTURED COMES FROM KINGSTON MASSACHUSETTS. AND IS ABOUT 35 YEARS
OLD. IT BELONGED TO MY GREAT UNCLE. THEY STOPPED USING THE SCOOP
FOR HARVESTING THE ENTIRE CRANBERRY BOG IN THE EARLY TO MIDDLE 1950S
WHEN A MECHANIZED PICKER WAS INTRODUCED INTO THE BUSINESS. IT WAS
STILL USED TO HARVEST ALONG THE SIDES OF THE BOG FOR THE
MECHANICAL PICKER COULDN'T HARVEST THERE.
THE OLD SCOOPS THAT ARE NO LONGER BEING USED IN THE BOG HAVE BEEN
USED IN THE HOME FOR NEWSPAPER RACKS AND MAGAZINE RACKS. IN SOME
CASES THE SCREEN WAS REMOVED AND A PIECE OF CREWEL WORK WAS PUT IN
ITS PLACE TO MAKE THE SCOOP MORE ATTRACTIVE.

SLEEP WALKING
NELL, MY MOTHER'S SISTER, USED TO WALK IN HER SLEEP.
SHE WALKED RIGHT OUT OF THE HOUSE ONE NIGHT TOWARD
THE RAILROAD TRACK THAT YOU HAD TO CROSS TO GET TO THE
ROAD. HER DAD MISSED HER AND RAN OUTSIDE TO FIND HER.
HE CAUGHT HER JUST AS SHE WAS STARTING TO CROSS THE TRACK
WITH A TRAIN COMIN'. HE JERKED HER OFF THE TRACK JUST
AS THE TRAIN RAN BY.
