LAZARKA

ON THE DAY OF LAZARUS IN BULGARIA, YOUNG GIRLS ARISE
EARLY TO DRESS IN THEIR FESTIVAL BEST. THEY THEN,
IN GROUPS, VISIT EVERY HOUSE IN THE VILLAGE, WISHING
THEIR INHABITANTS GOOD LUCK AND PROSPERITY, WHILE
CHASING OUT THE EVIL SPIRITS.

Submitter comment: THE INFORMANT SAID THIS FESTIVAL WAS CONNECTED WITH
THE RELIGIOUS EVENT OF CHRIST RAISING LAZARUS FROM
HIS TOMB.

GOOD LUCK NUT

NUTS ARE PLACED IN DISHES AS PART OF THE CHRISTMAS
FEAST CELEBRATION IN BULGARIA. EVERYONE IN THE
HOUSEHOLD RETAINS ONE TO BE SAVED UNTIL NEW YEAR'S
DAY. EVERYONE THEN BREAKS OPEN THEIR NUT AND THE
CONDITION OF THE INTERIOR INDICATES THE OWNER'S
FUTURE FOR THE COMING YEAR. A SOUND NUT MEAT
INDICATES PROSPERITY FOR ITS OWNER, WHILE A ROTTEN IN-
TERIOR SAYS THE COMING YEAR WILL NOT BE GOOD FOR
ITS OWNER.

Submitter comment: INFORMANT REMEMBERS THIS AS A COMMON PRACTICE OF
HIS FAMILY IN BULGARIA.

BUBURNIZA

IN BULGARIA, JUST PRIOR TO LENT, THE YOUNG BOYS OF THE
VILLAGE SPEND TIME CONSTRUCTING SPECIAL WOODEN TOYS.
THE TOY IS CARVED OUT OF A PARTICULAR KIND OF TREE
BRANCH INTO A TINY PYRAMID. A SLIT AND A SMALL HOLE ARE
CARVED INTO ITS SIDE. A SLIVER OF RESILIENT WOOD
CONNECTS THE TWO. A STICK IS INSERTED INTO THE HOLE
TO BE USED AS A HANDLE WHILE A SET OF SMALL WOODEN
WINGS ARE INSERTED IN THE SLIT. AT A PREARRANGED
TIME THE YOUNG MEN GATHER AT NIGHT AROUND A HUGE
BONFIRE. EACH BOY IN TURN HITS HIS BUBURNIZA
FROM THE UNDERSIDE WITH ANOTHER STICK; THIS RELEASES
THE WINGED PROJECTILE. EACH BOY THEN CALLS A PARTICULAR
NAME AS THE PROJECTILE EJECTS. THE HIGHER THE WINGS
GO IT IS SAID THE LONGER THAT PARTICULAR PERSON WILL
LIVE.
