GHOSTS

ONE TIME, AT NIGHT, IN THE HILLS SURROUNDING CENTER
RIDGE, ARKANSAS, MY GRANDFATHER WAS OPOSSUM HUNTING.
HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A FRIEND AND HIS HUNTING DOG
WHEN HE SAW A WHITE FIGURE WALKING THROUGH THE BRUSH.
THE FIGURE WAS A GLOWING WHITE. THE DOG ALSO SAW
THE "GHOST" AND STARTED AFTER IT. MY GRANDFATHER'S
FRIEND DID NOT SEE THE GHOST SINCE HE WAS NOT LOOKING
IN THAT DIRECTION. THE FRIEND DID NOT BELIEVE THE
TALE. HOWEVER, MY GRANDFATHER LEARNED LATER THAT
HE WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE TO SEE THE GHOST. OTHERS
HAD SPOTTED THE FIGURE IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA
ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS.

SCRATCHIN'

A YOUNG COUPLE WAS ON A DATE AND WERE TRAVELING DOWN
A DIRT ROAD. IT WAS DARK OUT AND QUITE WINDY OUT.
AS THE COUPLE WERE DRIVING, THE CAR RAN OUT OF GAS.
THE BOY TOLD HIS DATE THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE
HER AND WALK BACK TO TOWN TO GET SOME GAS. HE TOLD HER
THAT EVERYTHING WOULD BE ALRIGHT BUT LOCK THE DOORS
AFTER HE LEFT AND NOT TO OPEN THE DOORS FOR ANY REASON.
HE LEFT AND THE GIRL STAYED IN THE CAR. SHE WASN'T
AFRAID. SUDDENLY SHE HEARD A SCRATCHING ON THE ROOF
OF THE CAR. SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK, BUT SHE
DARED NOT OPEN THE DOORS. SHE REALLY GOT SCARED.
SO SHE LAID DOWN IN THE CAR TO TRY AND HIDE FROM
WHATEVER IT WAS THAT WAS OUT THERE. ALL THE WHILE
THIS SCRATCHING PERSISTED. THIS KEPT UP FOR OVER AN
HOUR. THEN SUDDENLY SHE HEARD A TAPPING AT THE
WINDOW. THE GIRL SPRANG UP AND SAW A LIGHT IN THE
SIDE WINDOW. IT WAS THE POLICE. THE GIRL WAS RELIEVED
TO SEE THEM AND THANKED THEM. BUT THE OFFICER SAID
HE WAS SORRY AND POINTED UP ABOVE THE CAR. THE GIRL
LOOKED UP AND SAW HER BOYFRIEND HANGING DEAD FROM A
LARGE TREE WITH ONE HAND RUBBING AGAINST THE TOP OF
THE CAR. THE WIND HAD BENT THE LIMBS OF THE TREE
DOWN AND CAUGHT THE BOY UP IN SUCH A WAY THAT HE
COULDN'T MOVE OR YELL. ONLY HIS ONE ARM BARELY REACHED
THE TOP OF THE CAR. THE ONLY THING HE COULD DO WAS
SCRATCH THE TOP OF THE CAR. ALL THE TIME HE WAS
TRYING TO GET THE GIRL TO HELP HIM.

TALL TALE

ONE TIME A FRIEND ASKED MY FATHER IF HE COULD SEND SOMEONE TO
MILK HIS COWS THAT NIGHT BECAUSE HE WOULD BE GONE. MY FATHER SAID
HE WOULD SEND ME. THE FRIEND SAID TO TAKE AS MUCH MILK AS WE
NEEDED IN PAYMENT. THAT EVENING I MILKED HIS COWS AND TOOK A
GALLON BUCKET OF MILK BACK WITH ME. I WAS WALKING HOME WITH MY
LITTLE BROTHER WITH ME BY THE HAND. IT WAS DARK ALREADY. I HEARD
A HOWL FROM A WOLF. I LOOKED AROUND AND SAW A BIG GRAY WOLF TROT-
TING BEHIND US. I STARTED TO WALK A LITTLE FASTER DRAGGING MY
LITTLE BROTHER WITH ME SINCE HE COULDN'T KEEP UP. I LOOKED AGAIN
AND THE WOLF WAS GETTING CLOSER. WHEN I SAW THAT, I STARTED OUT
LIKE LIGHTNING. I WAS RUNNING SO FAST THAT MY LITTLE BROTHER WAS
DANGLING BEHIND ME, HOLDING ON TO MY HAND. HIS FEET DIDN'T TOUCH
THE GROUND MORE THAN TWICE ALL THE REST OF THE WAY HOME, THAT'S
HOW FAST I WAS RUNNING.

OWL STORY

AN OWL WAS SITTING IN A TREE DURING THE DEAD OF WINTER.
THE OWL WAS FREEZING. HE SAW A CABIN DOWN IN THE
VALLEY WITH SMOKE POURING FROM ITS CHIMNEY. THE OWL
THOUGHT IT WOULD BE NICE TO BE SITTING NEXT TO A
NICE WARM FIRE, SO HE FLEW TOWARDS THE CABIN AND WAS
IN SUCH A HURRY THAT HE FLEW RIGHT INTO THE WINDOW
AND KNOCKED HIMSELF OUT. NOW A VETENARY {VETERINARY}
LIVED IN THE CABIN AND HEARD THE OWL HIT THE WINDOW
SO HE WENT OUTSIDE AND FOUND THIS OWL LAYING ON THE
GROUND, SO HE BROUGHT THE OWL INSIDE. WHEN HE GOT
INSIDE, HE BEGAN TO CHECK THE OWL OVER AND FOUND THAT
ITS TONSILS NEEDED TO BE TAKEN OUT, SO HE DID. THEN HE
FOUND THAT THE OWL HAD PILES, SO HE GOT RID OF THOSE.
WHEN THE OWL GOT BETTER, THE VETENARY LET HIM GO. THE
OWL WAS SITTING IN THAT SAME TREE, ONE DAY, WHEN ANOTHER
OWL CAME AND SAT NEXT TO HIM. IT WAS COLD THAT DAY AND
THE OTHER OWL SAID, "SAY, WHY DON'T WE GO DOWN TO THAT
CABIN AND GET WARM BY THE FIRE." THE OWL REPLIED,
"NO THANKS! A VETENARY LIVES IN THAT CABIN." "SO
WHAT?" "I WENT DOWN THERE ONCE AND HE TOOK OUT MY
TONSILS AND GOT RID OF MY PILES. NOW I CAN'T SHIT
WORTH A HOOT OR HOOT WORTH A SHIT."
