CUSTOM
THE MOST HONORED AND RESPECTED PERSON IN THAILAND IS THE KING.
HE IS THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF THE PEOPLE, THE TEMPORAL HEAD OF
THE COUNTRY AND THE SYMBOL OF THAILAND'S CULTURE. HIS PICTURE
AND THAT OF THE ROYAL FAMILY IS DISPLAYED IN THE SHOPS, HOMES AND
OFFICES. AT THE END OF LARGE GATHERINGS,
MOVIES, PLAYS, OR RECEPTIONS
THE KING'S ANTHEM IS PLAYED AND EVERYONE STANDS AT ATTENTION.
IN THE MOVIES, HIS PICTURE IS SHOWN ON THE SCREEN AND EVERYONE IS
EXPECTED TO RISE. CRIMES OF DISRESPECT AGAINST THE KING ARE
PUNISHABLE BY LAW.

THIS IS DONE BY PUTTING THE HANDS TOGETHER IN A PRAYING
POSITION BEFORE YOUR FACE AND SLIGHTLY NODDING YOUR

Custom
Buddhists wear miniature images of buddha around their necks. When displaying the image of the Lord Buddha in the homes or elsewhere, the Thai are careful to place the image high enough so that no human can be at a higher level or walk above the image.

GHOST BELIEF
IN THAILAND EVERYONE IS AFRAID OF GHOSTS, WHEN MY AUNT
WAS THERE SHE HAD A HOUSEKEEPER WHO
WAS VERY AFRAID OF GHOSTS. ONE DAY
SHE CAME HOME AND HER HOUSEKEEPER WASN'T THERE. TWO DAYS LATER SHE
RETURNED. SHE SAID SHE HAD HEARD A GHOST SO SHE LEFT.

THE SPIRIT WATCHES
IN SMALL VILLAGES OF THAILAND, IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE SPIRIT
OF SOME NATIVE OF THAT TOWN WHO HAD DIED LONG AGO STILL WATCHES OVER
THE TOWN, PROTECTING IT FROM EVIL. THE SPIRIT OF THIS PERSON MAKES
HIMSELF KNOWN BY APPEARING TO A FEW OF THE VILLAGERS, PROVING HIS
AUTHENTICITY BY TELLING PEOPLE
THEIR LIFE HISTORY IN ITS ENTIRETY.
THIS HAS ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN MANY CASES, AND NO EXPLANATION
CAN BE GIVEN OF A NATURAL SORT.
