NEW YEAR CUSTOM

THERE IS A GREEK TRADITION WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BRING
GOOD LUCK. THERE IS A PASTRY CALLED PETA WHICH IS BAKED
IN A SQUARE PAN. BEFORE IT IS BAKED THE COOK PUTS
MONEY RANGING FROM A NICKEL TO FIFTY CENTS. IT USED TO BE
A FIFTY CENT PIECE BUT NOW THAT MONEY IS PRECIOUS IT'S GETTING
SMALLER AND SMALLER. ANYWAYS, THEY PUT THIS COIN IN THE DOUGH
AND BAKE IT. THE PERSON WHO GETS THE PIECE WITH THE COIN
WILL HAVE GOOD LUCK THAT WHOLE YEAR. THE CEREMONY HAPPENS ON
NEW YEAR'S DAY.

FIRST, HAVE THE PREGNANT WOMAN LIE DOWN. NEXT YOU GET A
SEWING NEEDLE, TIE A PIECE OF STRING THROUGH THE "EYE" OF
THE NEEDLE. NOW YOU ARE TO HOLD THE STRING AT THE
END ALLOWING THE NEEDLE TO SWING FREE. YOU HOLD THE
NEEDLE OVER THE ABDOMEN OF THE PREGNANT WOMAN AND WATCH
THE ROTATION OF THE NEEDLE. IF THE NEEDLE SWINGS
VERTICALLY, THE CHILD WILL BE A BOY. IF THE NEEDLE SWINGS
HORIZONTALLY, THE CHILD WILL BE A GIRL. YOU SHOULD BE
STANDING AT HER FEET TO WATCH THE DIRECTION OF THE SWING.

Emergency Phone Calls

When I was a child, I always wore Penny Loafers. My mother would
put dimes in the penny slots of my shoes, just so that I would always
have twenty cents to make a phone call in case of an emergency.

Submitter comment: The dimes I was forced to wear helped me out of a difficult
situation more than once.
