ST. JOHN'S EVE
ON A PLEASANT ST. JOHN,S EVE
IN THE QUIET OF A PRETTY HILLSIDE
A MOTHER SAT, WHILE AT HER KNEE
A FAINTING DAUGHTER FELL.
O MOTHER, MOTHER, MY HEART ACHES
BECAUSE LEON MAY NOT RETURN,
MAYBE HIS HORSE WILL THROW HIM FROM THE SADDLE
OR AN EVIL PERSON WILL KILL HIM.
(TWICE)
O CAROLINE, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
WHERE ARE ALL YOUR PROMISES?
YOU WROTE, "OH, COME, COME."
NOW YOU ARE IN THE ARMS OF ANOTHER.
MY HORSE, MY HORSE, LET US RETURN HOME.
THEY HAVE NO BREAD FOR US HERE.
THERE IN THE VALLEY WHERE THE STREAM FLOWS,
THERE IS OUR BELOVED HOME.
(TWICE)
POLISH VERSION:
Wieczor Pogodny
Wieczor pogodny Swietego Jana
Ucich pieknego pagorka,
Siedziala matka, na jej kolana
Upada zemdlona corka.
O Mamo, mamo, serce mnie boli,
Bo moze Leon nie wroci,
Moze go konik ze siodia rzuczi,
Albozly czlowiek ubile.
O Karolino, cozes zrobiloa
gdzie twoje wszystkie zaklencia,
Tys mi pisala, ach przyjedz, przyjedz, przyjedz
Teraz zes w innych objenciach.
Koniu muj koniu, wrocmy do domu.
Tu dla nas nie maja chleda.
Tam na dolinie, gdzie strumyk plynie,
Tam nasza chata kochana.

MY MOTHER USED TO SING THIS SONG TO ME WHEN I WAS A CHILD. SHE TOLD
ME SHE LEARNED IT FROM A LADY WITH WHOM SHE WORKED DURING 1926-1929,
IN VARIOUS DOWNTOWN BUILDINGS--WASHINGTON BLVD. BLDG., INDUSTRIAL
BANK BLDG., AND EATON TOWER (NOW BRODERICK TOWER).
THE LADY, SADIE MANDULAK, BROUGHT THE SONG FROM THE UKRAINE.
ON THE NOTE ON WHICH THIS SONG WAS WRITTEN, MY MOTHER WROTE:
"TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE." I TAKE THIS TO MEAN THAT THIS IS
THE WAY THE SONG IS REMEMBERED BY HER.
MY MOTHER USED TO SING THIS, IN ITS POLISH VERSION, TO ME WHEN
I WAS JUST A LITTLE GIRL. I REMEMBER SHE USED TO ROCK ME AND
OFTEN I WOULD FALL ASLEEP TO THE SONG. LATER (13 TO 15 YEARS LATER.
IN FACT.) SHE SANG THE VERY SAME SONG TO MY SISTER, AS SHE PUT
HER TO SLEEP.

MISS DAMIN HEARD THIS IN TOKYO IN 1956 FROM A DUTCH WOMAN,
MISS RUTH AMSLER. MISS AMSLER CLAIMED THAT IT CAME FROM A
TRUE STORY OF EARLY AMERICA. THE STORY WAS THAT TWO LOVERS QUARRELED
OVER THE SAME GIRL. ONE WOUNDS THE OTHER WIH A KNIFE AND FOR THIS
IS LOCKED IN A TOWER. AS HE LOOKS OUT HE SEES HIS RIVAL AND HIS LOVE
RIDING OFF WITH THEIR WEDDING PARTY, SO HE SINGS THIS SONG.

IRISH SONG
ERIN THE TEAR AND THE SMILE IN THINE EYES,
BLEND LIKE THE RAINBOW'S LIGHT THAT SHINES IN THE SKIES.
SHINING THROUGH SORROWS STREAMS,
GLADDENING THROUGH PLEASURE BEAMS,
THY SUNS WITH DOUBTFUL GLEAM WEEP WHILE THEY RISE.
ERIN THY SILENT TEAR, NEVER SHALL CEASE,
ERIN, THY LANGUID SMILE NE'ER SHALL INCREASE,
TILL LIKE THE RAINBOW,S LIGHTS,
THY VARIOUS TINTS UNITE
AND FORM IN HEAVEN,S SIGHT ONE ARCH OF PEACE.

A POLISH SONG: O MY ROSEMARY PLANT, BURST INTO BUD
O MY ROSEMARY PLANT, BURST INTO BUD,
O MY ROSEMARY PLANT, BURST INTO BUD.
I WILL GO TO MY GIRL,
I WILL SEE THE ONE GIRL AND WOO HER NOW.
I WILL GO TO MY GIRL,
I WILL SEE THE ONE GIRL
AND WOO HER NOW.
AND IF SHE SHOULD ANSWER, "I LOVE YOU NOT,"
UHLANS ARE RECRUITING
SHARPSHOOTERS ARE MARCHING.
I WILL JOIN THEM.
THEY'LL GIVE ME A ROAN HORSE, SURE-FOOTED, FLEET,
AND A SHARP-EDGED SABRE,
AND A SHARP EDGED SABRE,
FIXED TO MY SIDE.
THEY'LL GIVE ME A CANTEEN, WITH VODKA FILLED,
THEN I'LL NOT BE YEARNING
THEN I'LL NOT BE YEARNING
FOR MY GIRL.
WE WILL GO OUT OF THE TRENCHES
WITH FIXED BAYONETS
THE BAYONETS WILL PIERCE ME
DEATH WILL KISS ME--BUT NOT YOU.

I NEVER WILL MARRY
ONE MORNING I RAMBLED
DOWN BY THE SEASHORE,
THE WIND IT DID WHISTLE
AND THE WATERS DID ROAR.
I HEARD A FAIR MAIDEN
GIVE A PITIFUL CRY,
AND IT SOUNDED SO LONELY
IN THE WATERS NEAR BY.
CHORUS
I NEVER WILL MARRY
I'LL BE NO MAN'S WIFE.
I INTEND TO LIVE SINGLE
ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE.
END CHORUS
THE SHELLS IN THE OCEAN
SHALL BE MY DEATH BED,
WHILE THE FISH IN DEEP WATER
SWIM OVER MY HEAD.
CHORUS
SHE CAST HER FAIR BODY
IN THE WATER SO DEEP,
SHE CLOSED HER PRETTY BLUE EYES,
FOREVER TO SLEEP.
REPEAT CHORUS TWO TIMES

Louisiana Funerals
My uncle and grandfather always told me of Louisiana-style
funerals where there were actually bands playing blues songs at the
funeral. After the memorial portion of the sermon, the funeral
procession would "march" to the place of interment to the beat of
blues songs. After gravesite services were over, the procession
would leave to the tune of "When the Saints Come Marching In."

Blood on the Saddle
There was blood on the saddle, and blood all around
And a great big puddle of blood on the ground.
The cowboy lay in it all covered with gore
And he won't go a riding no broncos no more.
Oh pity the cowboy all bloody and red,
For his bronco fell on him and mashed in his head.
