SURE IT'S LIKE A MORN IN SPRING

FOR WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING,
THEY CAN STEAL YOUR HEART AWAY.

I ATTENDED THE ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE ON MARCH 14, 1982 IN
DETROIT, MICHIGAN. THERE WERE DIGNITARIES LEADING THE PARADE,
FLOATS, MARCHERS AND BANDS. THE MOST AMAZING SIGHT WAS THE BEER-
PASSING ACTIVITY. I'VE BEEN TO MANY PARADES, BUT THIS WAS THE
FIRST TIME I'D SEEN PARTICIPANTS AND AUDIENCE MEMBERS PASSING
GLASSES OF BEER BACK AND FORTH. I WAS QUITE AMAZED.

Submitter comment: THOSE IRISH SURE KNOW HOW TO CELEBRATE.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY IS A BIG DAY IN OUR HOUSE.
THE CELEBRATION BEGINS WITH MORNING MASS AT
HOLY TRINITY CHURCH IN DETROIT. AFTER MASS
WE ATTEND A RECEPTION (OR PARTY) FOR BRUNCH.
THERE IS ALWAYS MUSIC AND DANCE WITH PLENTY
OF SINGING. BAGPIPES AND DRUMS CAN BE HEARD
FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. AFTER THE RECEPTION
WE PREPARE FOR THE REST OF THE DAY AND NIGHT.
THE ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE TAKES
PLACE ON THE PRECEDING WEEKEND. I USUALLY
ATTEND THIS.

ON ST. PATRICK'S DAY, OUR FAMILY SAYS THE WORD, "LUCK,"
AFTER EVERY SENTENCE. IF WE FORGET TO SAY IT, AND SOMEONE
CATCHES US, WE MUST WHISTLE AND TURN AROUND IN A CIRCLE
FOR ONE MINUTE. "MY MOTHER'S FRIEND, FROM THE STATES,
STARTED THIS IN HER FAMILY. SHE VISITED US WHEN I WAS
VERY YOUNG AND STARTED THIS TRADITION IN OUR FAMILY."

Submitter comment: I MET CONNOR AT A HOTEL I STAYED AT IN IRELAND. THERE
WAS A HUGE PARTY GOING ON AT THE HOTEL BAR WHERE I MET
HIM. I THOUGHT HIS TRADITION WAS FUNNY BECAUSE IT
SEEMS LIKE A TRADITION THAT WOULD BE STARTED IN IRELAND,
NOT THE UNITED STATES. I"LL NEVER FORGET WHEN HE
REFERRED OT THE UNITED STATES AS, "THE STATES."
