GREEK CUSTOM

JANUARY 1 IS ALSO ST. BASIL'S DAY. IT IS TRADITIONAL
FOR FAMILIES TO HAVE A HONEY AND NUT CAKE. A GOLD COIN
IS PLACED IN THE CAKE BEFORE BAKING. THE FATHER CUTS
THE CAKE MIDNIGHT, NEW YEAR'S EVE. THE FIRST SERVING
IS RESERVED FOR ST. BASIL, THE SECOND FOR THE HOUSE,
THE REMAINING FOR EACH MEMBER OF THE FAMILY. THE ONE
WHO GETS THE GOLD COIN WILL HAVE GOOD LUCK FOR THE
COMING YEAR. IF IT IS THE SAINT'S OR THE HOUSE'S
PORTION, EVERYONE WILL SHARE A GOOD FORTUNE.
