CHRISTMAS CUSTOM

ONE POLISH CHRISTMAS CUSTOM IS THAT OF FILLING THE STABLE SCENE. FOR
EACH GOOD DEED DONE BY THE CHILD, HE IS ALLOWED TO PLACE A STATUE IN
THE STABLE. AFTER ALL THE STATUES ARE IN, FOR EACH GOOD DEED DONE BY
THE CHILD, HE PLACES A PIECE OF STRAW IN THE CRIB OF THE CHRIST
CHILD. ON CHRISTMAS MORNING THE CHILD AWAKES TO FIND THE CHRIST
CHILD LAYING IN THE STRAW FILLED CRIB.

CHRISTMAS CUSTOM

ON EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE, MY FAMILY HAS A SMALL SERVICE BEFORE ALL THE
CHILDREN GO UP TO BED TO WAIT FOR SANTA TO COME. WE ALL GATHER IN A
PROCESSION, WITH THE YOUNGEST AT THE FRONT CARRYING THE SMALL STATUE
OF THE BABY JESUS, WHICH HE OR SHE PLACES IN THE MANGER SCENE. THEN
WE ALL GATHER AROUND THE CRIB SERVICE AND MY FATHER READS A SHORT
PASSAGE FROM THE BIBLE WHICH HE SELECTS.

MRS. BARBERO HAS A CUT CRYSTAL BOWL OF FRUIT WITH LIGHT BULBS IN
DIFFERENT PARTS OF ITS STRUCTURE. IT IS A FAMILY HEIRLOOM. ON
CHRISTMAS EVE, SHE LIGHTS IT UP. IT SYMBOLIZES GOD'S BLESSING, IN
SO FAR THAT THE FAMILY DID NOT HAVE TO PART WITH IT; THE FAMILY
HAD ADEQUATE RESOURCES TO ENJOY AT CHRISTMAS. THIS CUSTOM HAD
ITS ORIGIN SUPPOSEDLY IN ITALY.

CHRISTMAS CUSTOMS

EVERY CHRISTMAS THE FATHER OF THE HOUSE WOULD GO OUT AND GET A
BARTH (BOUGH?) OF HOLLY, BRINGING IT HOME ON HIS BACK. THE WOMEN
MEANWHILE WOULD CLEAN THE HOUSE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. THEN HOLLY
WOULD BE PUT ALL OVER THE HOUSE. MISELTOE (MISTLETOE) WAS HUNG
AND CANDLES WERE PLACED IN EVERY WINDOW. THERE WAS NO CHRISTMAS
TREE. ON CHRISTMAS EVE THE DOOR OF THE HOUSE WOULD BE LEFT
OPEN, NO MATTER HOW COLD IT WAS, SO THAT THE BABY JESUS COULD COME
IN OUT OF THE COLD WHEN HE PASSED BY.

(GRANDFATHER), A SYMBOL OF THE GATHERING OF THE CLAN; THIS
IS DONE BY THE MASTER OF THE HOUSEHOLD. (IN THE CITIES
THIS TRADITION HAS BEEN MODIFIED AND THE SHEAF IS REPLACED
WITH A FEW STALKS OF WHEAT IN A VASE.) THE SHEAF IS
PLACED IN THE CORNER OF THE DINING ROOM AND
REMAINS THERE UNTIL NEW YEAR WHEN IT IS TAKEN OUT AND BURNED.

IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA AT CHRISTMAS-TIME A FAMILY BRINGS STRAW INTO THE
HOUSE, BEFORE PUTTING IT DOWN, THEY PRAY TOGETHER AND WISH FOR A GOOD
YEAR. THE STRAW STAYS ON THE FLOOR FOR A WHOLE DAY AND NIGHT. THE
FAMILY SLEEPS ON IT INSTEAD OF SLEEPING IN THEIR BEDS. ON THE DAY
AFTER CHRISTMAS, THE STRAW IS BRAIDED AND PUT AROUND A TREE THAT IS
OUTSIDE.
