HARD CIDER
WHEN I WAS AN UNDERGRADUATE AND LIVED IN A DORMITORY
EVERY FALL A GROUP OF THE FELLOWS AND MYSELF WOULD
MAKE A TREK OUT TO ONE OF THE CIDER MILLS JUST OUTSIDE
THE GREATER DETROIT AREA. IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT WE
GET FRESH, UNTREATED , NON-HOMOGENIZED CIDER, BECAUSE
WE INTENDED TO LET IT FERMENT OR "GET HARD." WE'D BRING
THE CIDER BACK BY THE GALLONS AND ADD A SMALL BOX OF
RAISINS TO EACH PLASTIC GALLON JUG. IN TWO WEEKS THAT
CIDER WOULD BE STRONG ENOUGH TO CURL YOUR HAIR. WE
NEVER HID IT (IT WAS AGAINST UNIVERSITY REGULATIONS
TO HAVE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IN ONE'S ROOM). THE
DORM ADVISERS SAW IT BUT NEVER REALIZED HOW HARD IT WAS.

CUSTOM OF KEEPING A RECORD OF TEACHER'S ECCENTRIC
DURING AN E 325 STATICS CLASS, TERM I, 1967-68, BEFORE
I TRANSFERRED FROM ENGINEERING TO ACCOUNTING, 5 OF MY
FRIENDS AND I NOTICED THE ECCENTRIC PRONUNCIATIONS
WHICH OUR TEACHER, DR. ALBERT B. KU, USED WHILE
TEACHING. THE HARDER WE LISTENED, THE MORE INTERESTING
THE DEFORMATIONS OF THE WORDS BECAME SO WE DECIDED
TO WRITE THE WORDS DOWN IN A JOURNAL AS WE HEARD
THEM. WE ENTITLED THE JOURNAL "A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING
EXACTLY WHAT KU IS SAYING." AFTER THAT SEMESTER, WE
COPIED THE JOURNAL AND SPLIT UP DUE TO TRANSFERS. NOW
WE COLLECT OTHER TEACHERS' ECCENTRIC PRONUNCIATIONS,
AND WHEN WE'RE TOGETHER, WE SWAP ENTRIES.

MANY YEARS AGO, THERE WAS A PRESIDENT OF A UNIVERSITY
(OR SOMETIMES IT IS A DEAN OR A PROFESSOR) WHO HAD A
LITTLE DOG NAMED PEDRO. JUST BEFORE FINALS, THE LITTLE
DOG DISAPPEARED. THE PRESIDENT WAS VERY UPSET AND
APPEALED TO THE STUDENTS TO HELP FIND THE DOG. HE
SAID IF PEDRO WAS FOUND, EXAMS WOULD BE CANCELLED AS
A REWARD. SO NATURALLY, THE STUDENTS WENT AROUND
SHOUTING, 'PEDRO! PEDRO!' THEY STILL DO IT BEFORE
EXAMS HOPING THAT SOMEHOW THE EXAMS WILL BE CANCELLED.

"PEDRO WAS A GRADUATE STUDENT IN SANSKRIT AND WAS DOING
HIS THESIS ON A PARTICULAR WORK IN SANSKRIT; MORE
PARTICULARLY, HE WAS DOING IT ON A PARTICULAR
SENTENCE IN THIS WORK, EVEN MORE PARTICULARLY, HE WAS
WRITING ON A PARTICULAR PAST PARTICIPLE IN THIS
SENTENCE AND HOW THIS PAST PARTICIPLE IS CONJUGATED.
HIS THESIS WAS REJECTED, HOWEVER, FOR BEING TOO
GENERAL, SO NOW PEDRO LIVES IN THE CAMPANILE ABOVE
THE BELLS AND STUDENTS CALL FOR HIM DURING FINALS
BECAUSE HE IS MAD AT THE ADMINISTRATION AND IS ONLY
TOO GLAD TO HELP THE STUDENTS."

AT BERKELEY UNIVERSITY, THE STUDENTS CAN BE HEARD
CALLING "PEDRO" AROUND EXAM TIME. THE REASON:
"PEDRO IS A MYTHICAL CHARACTER WHO ONCE IN THE
REMOTE PAST EITHER STOLE ALL THE EXAMS FROM THE
PROFESSORS OR DID SOMETHING ELSE WHICH PREVENTED
EXAMS FROM BEING GIVEN. THE STUDENTS ARE CALLING
FOR PEDRO TO COME AGAIN."

VIA THE TUNNELS
THE INFORMANT RELATES A STORY ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF
DETROIT MCNICHOLS CAMPUS WHEN IT WAS YOUNG. IN TIMES
OF BAD WEATHER, BOTH FACULTY AND STUDENTS WOULD TRAVEL
FROM ONE BUILDING TO ANOTHER BY THE WAY OF THE STEAM
TUNNELS.
LATELY, THIS HASN'T BEEN DONE. IS IT BECAUSE OUR WEATHER
IS MILDER OR DO WE HAVE STURDIER STUDENTS AND MORE
SNOW SHOVELS?
