HOW TWO MEDICINE LAKE GOT ITS NAME

WHEN THE GOVERNMENT SET ASIDE A TRACT OF LAND IN NORTHERN MONTANA
FOR A NATIONAL PARK, ONE OF THE TASKS WAS TO GIVE NAMES TO MANY
OF THE NATURAL FEATURES--STREAMS, MOUNTAINS, ETC. ON THE SHORES
OF TWO MEDICINE LAKE THERE WERE FOUND THE REMAINS OF TWO OLD
MEDICINE LODGES, USED AT ONE TIME TO HOUSE THE INITIATION CEREMONY
MAKING YOUNG BLACKFOOT INDIAN BOYS OFFICIALLY MEN OF THE TRIBE.
THE LAKE WAS FIRST CALLED THE LAKE OF THE TWO MEDICINE LODGES,
OR A SIMILAR TITLE. BY CONSTANT USE, THE NAME WAS SHORTENED,
UNTIL TODAY IT BEARS THE NAME TWO MEDICINE LAKE.

Submitter comment: AS WAS TOLD TO ME BY A FOREST RANGER AT GLACIER NATIONAL PARK
IN AUGUST, 1969.

KICK THE CAN

WHEN I WAS A BOY IN BETHEL PARK, PENNSYLVANIA, WE
PLAYED A GAME CALLED "KICK THE CAN." SIMILAR TO
HIDE AND SEEK, THE PERSON WHO IS "IT" MUST IDENTIFY
THE HIDDEN PEOPLE AND WHERE THEY ARE. HE MAY ONLY DO
THIS WHILE HE HAS THE CAN. HOWEVER, THIS CAN MUST STAY
AT "HOME."
IF THE HIDERS CAN GET TO THE CAN AND THROW IT AWAY
FROM "HOME," THE CAUGHT ARE RELEASED. THUS
SOMETIMES WHEN "IT" SPOTS SOMEONE AND RACES FOR THE
CAN, THE PRISONERS MAY ALREADY HAVE BEEN FREED OR THE
PERSON IDENTIFIED MAY BEAT "IT" TO HOME AND THROW
THE CAN TO PREVENT HIS OWN "CAPTURE."

THE FOUNDING OF KRAKOW

ONCE THERE WAS A SETTLEMENT OF PEOPLE ON THE VISTULA RIVER NEAR
THE FOOT OF THE KARPATH MOUNTAINS. HOWEVER, THERE ALSO LIVED A
DRAGON IN A CAVE (CALLED THE JASKINIA). EVERY DAY HE WOULD COME
TO THE SETTLEMENT AND SWALLOW SOME SHEEP, AND THEN GO TO THE
VISTULA TO WASH HIS MEAL DOWN AND BACK TO HIS JASKINIA TO SLEEP.
THE PEOPLE WERE ANGRY--ESPECIALLY THE SHEPHERDS AND NOBLEMEN.
THE SHEPHERDS AND THE PEOPLE OFFERED REWARDS OF ALL SORTS TO
ANYONE WHO COULD KILL THE DRAGON. MANY GLORY-SEEKING NOBLEMEN
TRIED, BUT WERE CRUSHED. THEN A SHOEMAKER NAMED KRAKUS STEPPED
FORWARD. HE KILLED A SHEEP, GUTTED IT, AND STUFFED IT WITH
SULPHUR. THE FOLLOWING DAY KRAKUS WATCHED THE DRAGON COME FROM
HIS JASKINIA AND IN HIS PATH KRAKUS PLACED THE SHEEP.
THE DRAGON SWALLOWED THE SHEEP WITH ONE GULP AND CONTINUED AFTER
MORE SHEEP. HOWEVER, THE DRAGON FELT A BURNING THIRST AND RUSHED
TO THE VISTULA RIVER. THERE THE DRAGON DRANK AND DRANK, NOT BEING
ABLE TO QUENCH HIS THIRST. HE CONTINUED DRINKING. FINALLY, THE
DRAGON BURST AND DIED.
KRAKUS WAS HAILED BY THE PEOPLE AND MADE THE CHIEF OF THE SETTLE-
MENT. THEY TOOK HIS NAME AND DUBBED THE SETTLEMENT KRAKOW, OR THE
PEOPLE OF KRAKOW.

Submitter comment: INFORMANT REMEMBERED BEING TOLD THIS STORY BY HIS FATHER AND FOUND
IT VERY INTERESTING.

THIS FELLA HAD A HOUNDDOG AND IT WAS USED TO RACCOON HUNT. THE
HIDE WOULD BE SAVED AND THE MEAT EATEN. THIS FELLA SAID HIS DOG
WAS UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. WHEN SOMEONE CAME TO VISIT HIM, HE'D
FIGURE OUT HOW MANY RACCOONS HE WOULD NEED TO FEED THEM. SO HE'D
TAKE THE DOG OUT TO THE SHED WHERE HE HAD ALL THESE RACCOON HIDES
HANGING UP. HE'D LOOK AT THEM, FIND THE ONE HE WANTED, CALL HIS
DOG OVER AND POINT TO THIS RACCOON SKIN. THE HOUND DOG WOULD RARE
UP AND HE'D SNIFF AND SNIFF THE HIDE, THEN TAKE OFF TO THE WOODS.
HE'D COME BACK WITH A RACCOON THE SAME EXACT SIZE OF THE HIDE THE
GUY POINTED TO. HE NEVER CAME BACK WITHOUT IT. THE GUY ALWAYS
KNEW THAT. THIS FELLA, HE SAID HE WAS SORRY 'CAUSE SOMEONE CAME
UP THERE ONE TIME WITH A RACCOON COAT ON. HE SAID HE WAS HOT AND
THE COAT WAS HEAVY SO HE HUNG IT UP THERE. THEN THAT HOUND DOG
UP AND SNIFFED THE COAT AND HE TOOK OFF. THE FELLA SAID, "I'D
NEVER SEE HIM 'CAUSE HE WON'T COME BACK WITHOUT IT."

THE SEA BAT IS A VERY RARE NAUTICAL ANIMAL. THEY
AREN'T CAUGHT VERY OFTEN, BUT WHEN THEY ARE, THEY ARE
PUT IN A BOX. EVERYONE WHO HAS BEEN AT SEA FOR
AWHILE HAS SEEN A SEA BAT, BUT IT'S STILL A REAL
OCCASION. WHEN YOU CATCH ONE, YOU PUT IT IN A BOX
ON THE STERN OF THE SHIP. SEA BATS DON'T LIVE VERY
LONG, SO YOU PASS THE WORD FOR ALL WHO HAVEN'T SEEN
ONE TO COME WHILE IT'S STILL ALIVE. ALL THE NEW
SEAMEN GO TO SEE THE BAT, WHICH IS UNDER A BOX WITH
TWO PEEPHOLES TO LOOK INTO. YOU HAVE TO GET DOWN
ON YOUR KNEES TO LOOK IN. OF COURSE, THERE'S NOTHING
IN THE BOX. THE NEW SEAMEN REALLY GETS RAPPED IN THE
BUTT.

Submitter comment: BUT THERE REALLY ARE SEA BATS. THE INFORMANT SAW ONE
IN THE GOLDEN GATE PARK AQUARIUM. AFTER A LONG
BIOLOGICAL NAME, IT SAID "SEA-BAT."
