KICK THE CAN

THIS GAME IS PLAYED BY THREE OR MORE PERSONS. ONE
PERSON IS "IT" AND COUNTS TO FIFTY AT A BASE, WHICH
IS A CAN. EVERYONE ELSE HIDES. WHEN THROUGH COUNTING,
THE COUNTER GOES AND LOOKS FOR THE OTHERS; WHEN HE SEES
SOMEONE HE RUNS AND KICKS THE CAN. THE PERSON WHO IS
SEEN ALSO RUNS AND KICKS THE CAN. THE FIRST ONE TO
KICK THE CAN WINS. THE HIDER IS EITHER CAUGHT OR IS
FREE. ANY HIDER MAY RUN TO THE CAN AND KICK IT ANY
TIME HE WISHES UNTIL ALL HIDERS ARE IN. THE FIRST ONE
CAUGHT IS "IT" FOR THE NEXT GAME.

HELEN'S GARNDMOTHER WENT TO A LITTLE COUNTRY TOWN TO VISIT
RELATIVES. THE GRANDMOTHER AND GRANDFATHER WENT TO CHURCH
IN THAT LITTLE TOWN ON SUNDAY. RIGHT BEFORE THE SERVICE
THE PEOPLE FOUND THAT HELEN'S GRANDMOTHER WAS AN ORGANIST.
SHE WAS ASKED TO PLAY THE ORGAN FOR THE SERVICE. SHE WENT
UP TO THE ORGAN AND THE PREACHER TOLD THE CONGREGATION
THAT THEY WOULD NOW SING A HYMN. THE CONGREGATION SAT THERE
QUIETLY, THE PREACHER STOOD THERE QUIETLY, AND HELEN'S
GRANDMOTHER SAT THERE QUIETLY. THE PREACHER DIDN'T
ANNOUNCE THE HYMN TITLE OR NUMBER. FINALLY, HELEN'S
GRANDMOTHER STARTED A FAMILIAR HYMN, AND EVERYONE STARTED TO
SING.

IN AUSTRIA-HUNGARY IN THE PAST CENTURY THERE WAS A WOMAN WITH FIVE
CHILDREN WHO ONE DAY REFUSED A GYPSY MALE SOME FOOD OR MONEY. HE
MUTTERED SOMETHING AND WENT AWAY. THE NEXT MORNING, WHEN THE WOMAN
OPENED THE WINDOW IN HER KITCHEN - THE WINDOWS OPENED INWARDS - SHE
FOUND A DAGGER STICKING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SILL. BEFORE THE YEAR
WAS UP SHE HAD LOST ALL OF HER FIVE CHILDREN TO DEATH, EACH SEPA-
RATELY. SHE TURNED TO DRINK AND LOST HER WILL TO LIVE. HER HUSBAND
REFUSED SYMPATHY AND BEAT HER UP INSTEAD. SHE FELL, BROKE HER HIP
AND DIED SHORTLY AFTER.
