PROVERBIAL COMPARISON

Outhouse

It is an outside toilet. People used it as a toilet to
dispose of their waste and lasted five to seven years. The hole
in the ground was four feet square and five feet deep. The house
was eight feet tall that was made of wood and the floor was made
of concrete. This was not only a custom but a way of life.

Bible Class on Wednesday

Bible Class was held during mid-week and generally known as a
mid-week service. Members attended this mid-week service so that
they could be taught the "Word of God," whereas Sunday was a day
of Worship.

Don't eat "chittlings" (chitterlings) in the summer. This
would give you an upset stomach because too much pork in the
summer was not good for your health. "Chittlings are the
intestines of hogs.

Religion (Baptist Church)

Religion means that you accept "Jesus Christ" as your
personal "Savior" and that you believe "He" died not only for
your sins but the sins of mankind.

Smoke house

A smoke house was made of wood and approximately 10 feet
square. It was used to store meat because some people had no
knowledge or any way of freezing meat. People hung meat on
hooks, in the smoke house, to preserve it, to protect it, and
keep it from spoiling.

Crackling Bread

Crackling was made from hog fat - you boiled the fat from a
hog and that made crackling. To made crackling bread you mixed
the boiled fat with corn meal, salt, baking powder and milk.
After all the ingredients were mixed together your baked it until
it was brown.

People canned vegetables and made preserves (jelly) from
fruit. They did this so that in the winter months they could eat
the food they had harvested in the summer.

Joke

One time a man went before the judge for sentencing and the
judge gave the man ten years for the {crime?} that he had committed
and the man started laughing and told the judge, "Oh! Your Honor,
I can do that standing on my head," so the judge said "Oh! Well,
here is ten more years to get you back on your feet again."
