COUNTING OUT

ONE POTATO, TWO POTATO, THREE POTATO, FOUR
FIVE POTATO, SIX POTATO, SEVEN POTATO, ORE.

Submitter comment: ALL MEMBERS PARTICIPATING IN A GAME HOLD OUT THEIR HANDS--
CLENCHED IN FISTS. ONE MEMBER TAKES HIS RIGHT FIST AND
WHILE SAYING THE RHYME, HITS EACH OTHER FIST IN TURN.
THE PERSON WHOSE FIST IS CALLED "ORE" REMOVES IT FROM
THE CIRCLE. WHEN BOTH FISTS OF ONE PERSON HAVE BEEN
ELIMINATED, HE PERSON IS OUT. THE LAST PERSON WITH
ONE FIST LEFT IS "IT."

If you say a prayer to St. Anthony when you lose something,
he will help you to find it.

Submitter comment: Mrs. Leisner really believes this to be true. Many times
as a young girl I witnessed my mother performing this
ritual, and even now we always know when she has lost
something when we hear her say "St. Anthony help me!"

THE BICYCLE

Historical record from James Callow Folklore Archive.

ONE TIME A MAN WAS PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE
ROAD BY POLICE, WHO SAID HE WAS DRUNK. "I'M NOT DRUNK,"
HE SAID, "HERE I'LL PROVE IT--I'LL WALK ON TOP OF THIS
FENCE." HE CLIMBED ON TOP OF IT AND FELL OVER TO
THE OTHER SIDE, WHERE THERE WAS A BIG, BLACK BULL.
SUDDENLY, THE MAN RUSHED AT THE BULL, GRABBED HIM BY
THE HORNS AND WRESTLED WITH HIM. THE BULL THREW HIM
OFF. AGAIN AND AGAIN, HE RUSHED AT THE BULL AND
WRESTLED WITH HIM, WHILE THE POLICE WATCHED IN AWE.
FINALLY, THE MAN QUIT WRESTLING THE BULL AND CROSSED
BACK OVER THE FENCE. "I GUESS YOU'RE RIGHT," HE SAID,
"I MUST BE DRUNK--ANYTIME I CAN'T TAKE A BICYCLE AWAY
FROM A COLORED KID."
