WHEN I WAS A (AN) UNDERGRADUATE AT MOREHEAD (KY.) STATE TEACHERS'
COLLEGE, NOW MOREHEAD STATE UNIVERSITY, IN 1939 AND 1940,
GOLDFISH SWALLOWING BECAME A FAD AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS
THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY. REPORTEDLY A BOY AT MOREHEAD SWALLOWED
TWENTY-FOUR LIVE GOLDFISH. HE WAS TOPPED BY A BOY AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY, WHICH WAS REFERRED TO LOCALLY AS THE
COUNTRY CLUB OF THE SOUTH, WHO SWALLOWED FORTY-TWO. I AM SURE
NEITHER OF THESE BOYS HELD THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. I DID
NOT WITNESS THE SWALLOWING, NOR DID ANYONE ELSE THAT I KNEW
TO BE TRUTHFUL. THE NEWSPAPERS REPORTED SWALLOWINGS THROUGH-
OUT THE COUNTRY. AS FAR AS I KNOW, NO GIRLS EVER COMPETED IN
THE GOLDFISH SWALLOWING CONTESTS.

THE HELPFUL DOLPHIN
DURING THE EARLY 1800S THERE WAS A STRAIT NEAR ICELAND
THAT WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SHIP TO TRAVEL THROUGH
WITHOUT CRACKING UP. ONE SHIP MAKING THE JOURNEY
SPOTTED A DOLPHIN SWIMMING AROUND THE SHIP. IT
FOLLOWED THE DOLPHIN AND MADE IT THROUGH SAFELY.
OTHER SHIPS ALSO STARTED TO FOLLOW THE DOLPHINS
AND THEY MADE IT THROUGH. THIS CONTINUED FOR ABOUT
TWENTY YEARS UNTIL THE DOLPHIN DISAPPEARED AND
WAS NEVER SEEN AGAIN.

THE WIGGLING TURTLE MEAT
BACK WHEN THE INFORMANT WAS A LITTLE GIRL (SOME 60-ODD
YEARS AGO), SHE WAS WALKING WITH HER BROTHERS BY THEIR
HOME IN KENTUCKY WHEN THEY SPOTTED A HUGE TURTLE.
WHERE SHE LIVED, TURTLE MEAT WAS A GREAT DELICACY, SO
SHE GOT A NEIGHBORING FARMER WHO RAN OUT OF HIS HOUSE
CARRYING AN AX. HE KNOCKED THE TURTLE ON THE SHELL AND
AS IT STUCK ITS HEAD OUT, HE CHOPPED IT OFF WITH THE AX.
THEN HE TURNED IT OVER AND SLICED THE UNDERBELLY AROUND
FROM END TO END. HE FOUND THAT THE TURTLE'S INSIDES
CONTAINED 40 EGGS. WHEN THE FARMER CUT OFF THE TURTLE'S
HEAD, THE REST OF THE BODY BEGAN TO WIGGLE. WHEN THE
INFORMANT'S GRANDMOTHER PREPARED THE MEAT IN THE PAN
IT STILL WIGGLED, AND IT DIDN'T STOP WIGGLING UNTIL SHE
TOOK IT OUT OF THE PAN. THAT WASN'T THE END OF THE
TURTLE, HOWEVER, FOR THE INFORMANT'S FAMILY USED TO EAT
POPCORN OUT OF THAT TURTLE'S SHELL FOR MANY YEARS.
