NOT GIVEN

ONCE THERE WAS A CHILD AT A PICNIC. HE FELL ASLEEP ON THE
BLANKET. WHEN THE PICNIC WAS OVER, HE SEEMED A LITTLE MORE
UNEASY AND RESTLESS THAN USUAL. DURING THE FOLLOWING NIGHT
HE SCREAMED CONTINUOUSLY. THE PARENTS FINALLY TOOK HIM TO
A DOCTOR. THE DOCTOR COULD SEE NOTHING WRONG UNTIL THE X-RAYS
WERE FINISHED.
AFTER EXAMINATION OF THE X-RAYS IT WAS FOUND THAT ANTS HAD
MADE A NEST IN THE FOREHEAD OF THE CHILD AND CAUSED THE
TERRIFIC PAIN TO MAKE HIM SUFFER.
EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS NOTICED, HE DIED BECAUSE THE ANTS HAD
DESTROYED MANY PARTS OF HIS BRAIN.

Submitter comment: THIS WAS TOLD TO ME IN A BIOLOGY CLASS IN COLLEGE. HE BROUGHT
OUT THAT HE READ IT IN A MEDICAL MAGAZINE.

AFTER SHE HAD BEEN AWAKENED TO GO HOME, HER CHEEK BEGAN TO ITCH.
THIS ITCH CONTINUED, NO MATTER HOW MUCH SHE SCRATCHED.
EVENTUALLY HER PARENTS NOTICED HER CONSTANT SCRATCHING OF HER

A REST HOME WHERE HER HANDS WERE TIED DOWN AND SHE COULDN'T

A FEW MONTHS LATER, WHEN HER MOTHER WAS VISITING HER, THE GIRL
ASKED THE MOTHER TO RELEASE HER HAND FOR JUST A MINUTE. THE
MOTHER GAVE IN TO HER DAUGHTER'S PLEADING AND DID SO. IMMEDIATELY
THE GIRL SCRATCHED HER CHEEK VIOLENTLY, TEARING OFF THE TOP LAYER
OF SKIN. THE WHOLE INSIDE OF HER CHEEK WAS FILLED WITH ANTS--
SHE HAD HOUSED A LIVING ANT COLONY.

BUFFALO HIDES

BUFFALO HIDES WERE OFTEN FILLED WITH VARIOUS VERMIN
AND IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO RID THE ANIMAL SKIN OF THESE.
IT WAS A COMMON PRACTICE AMONG THE INDIANS TO PUT
THE HIDE NEAR A "BLACK ANT" HILL. THE ANTS WOULD
EAT THE VERMIN. THE PROCESS TOOK SEVERAL DAYS, AS
THERE WOULD BE SEVERAL THOUSAND VERMIN EGGS ON THE
HAIR AND SKIN OF THE HIDE.

PINE TAR WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST NEEDED THINGS FOR A LUM-
BERJACK. THEY USED IT TO KEEP BUGS AND MOSQUITOES AWAY.
THAT REMINDS ME OF A FUNNY STORY. ONE TIME THE MATTER BOY AND
BILL CRAIG WERE IN A TAR PAPER SHANTY WHEN A CYCLONE HIT.
WELL THAT CYCLONE HIT THAT TAR PAPER SHANTY AND PICKED IT UP
AND TURNED IT AROUND. FINALLY, IT BROUGHT IT BACK DOWN TO
EARTH AND SET THE FRONT WHERE THE BACK WAS BEFORE. WELL, THE
MATTER BOY CAME OUT AND HE WAS O-K. WHEN HE ASKED BILL IF HE
WAS HURT, BILL TOLD HIM THAT HE WAS CUT UP PRETTY BAD AND WAS
BLEEDIN SOMETHIN AWFUL. WELL, WHEN THE MATTER BOY WENT IN TO
SEE WHAT WAS WRONG WITH BILL, HE SAW THAT BILL WAS NOT HURT
BUT WAS ONLY COVERED WITH PINE TAR THAT HAD SPILLED FROM A
SHELF ABOVE HIS HEAD.

THIS MAN HAD BROKE HIS LEG IN A CAR ACCIDENT.HE
HAD A FULL LEG CAST. JUST ABOVE HIS KNEE HE
HAD A SEVERE ITCH; TO SCRATCH HIS LEG HE
UNWOUND A WIRE COAT HANGER, AND USED THAT TO SCRATCH
HIS LEG. AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF SLIDING THE HANGER
DOWN THE CAST AND SCATCHING HIS LEG HE REALIZED THAT
HE HAD BROKEN THE SKIN. A FEW DAYS LATER HIS TOES
BEGAN TO SWELL SO BAD THAT THE CAST HAD TO BE REMOVED
FROM HIS LEG. WHEN THE DOCTOR REMOVED THE
CAST THE PART OF THE SKIN THAT HAD BEEN BROKEN
WAS HEALED OVER BUT UNDER HIS SKIN WAS A ANT COLONY.
AN ANT CRAWLED IN THE CAST AND LAYED EGGS IN THE
OPEN WOUND ON HIS LEG.

A MAN WAS WALKING DOWN A COUNTRY ROAD ONE NIGHT WHEN HE SAW
A HOTEL IN THE DISTANCE. FEELING TIRED, HE DECIDED TO STOP FOR
THE NIGHT.
"CAN I HELP YOU?" ASKED THE INNKEEPER AS THE MAN WALKED
INTO THE LOBBY.
"I COULD USE A ROOM," THE MAN REPLIED.
"I GOT ONE ROOM LEFT," ANSWERED THE INNKEEPER. "MY
DAUGHTER'S SLEEPING IN THERE, BUT I'LL LET YOU HAVE IT ANYWAY,
SO DON'T YOU GET NO IDEAS."
THE MAN AGREED, AND PICKED UP THE KEY. WHILE UNDRESSING
FOR BED, HE NOTICED THAT THE INNKEEPER'S DAUGHTER WAS QUITE
BEAUTIFUL, SO HE FIGURED THAT A GOOD-NIGHT KISS COULDN'T
HURT.
HE AWOKE THE NEXT MORNING, AND AS HE CHECKED OUT, HE ASKED THE
INNKEEPER WHY HIS MOUTH HAD BECOME FULL OF RICE WHEN HE KISSED
HIS DAUGHTER.
"YOU PEOPLE NEVER LISTEN," SIGHED THE INNKEEPER. "THAT
WASN'T RICE. IT WAS MAGGOTS. MY DAUGHTER'S BEEN DEAD FOR
SEVEN YEARS."

Submitter comment: I REPEATED THE STORY TO TWO FRIENDS. BOTH HAD ALREADY
HEARD A SIMILAR VERSION.

Railroad Ghost

A true story about a train that was running through a
very thick fog one night with several VIP's aboard
including Queen Victoria. The engineer wanted to
make his run in record time. Suddenly up ahead he
thought he saw a black cloaked figure who was waving
him to stop. The engineer did so but could find no one
but decided to further investigate. He went up further
ahead and to his surprise and horror he found that
the bridge had washed out. After the bridge was repaired
and the engineer had made it home did he solve the mystery;
he found moth stuck to the engine's headlamp as to appear to
be a figure waving to stop, saving all, including the Queen.

Submitter comment: This was told at a swapping of ghost stories at a
Halloween party. Roy waved his arms like a moth would.

SPIDERS

IN SCOTLAND, SPIDERS ARE GOOD LUCK AND THIS STORY
DATES BACK TO THE 15TH OR 16TH CENTURY. WHEN THE
CLANS WERE AT WAR IN SCOTLAND, THE CLAN THAT WAS
BEING DEFEATED STARTED TO RETREAT AND THE PRINCE OF
THAT CLAN SOUGHT REFUGE IN A CAVE. ONCE INSIDE,
HE SAW A SPIDER AND WAS JUST ABOUT TO KILL IT, WHEN HE
THOUGHT TO HIMSELF THAT HE KNEW WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE
HUNTED AND HE DECIDED TO LET THE SPIDER LIVE. AFTER
A TIME THE SPIDER WOVE A WEB ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE
CAVE AND WHEN THE ENEMY CLAN CAME TO SEARCH THE CAVE
FOR THE PRINCE, THEY SAID, "HE COULD NOT BE IN THERE
BECAUSE THE SPIDER WEB WOULD HAVE BEEN BROKEN." SO
THEY PASSED THAT CAVE ON AND THE PRINCE'S LIFE WAS
SAVED. THAT IS WHY IT IS BAD LUCK TO KILL A SPIDER.
