A LITTLE BIRD COMES A WINGING
TO SHARPEN HIS BEAK ON THAT MOUNTAIN;
THEN HE QUICKLY DISAPPEARS.

Mt. Lemon in Tucson, Arizona is said to have the Red God of
Fire. This is a creature which walks the mountain whenever
heat lightning strikes the mountain in the form of red
lightning.
Submitter comment:
A silly myth, of course everybody knows that light cannot
walk. The short story was still imaginative and somewhat
interesting.

In south central Michigan it was believed that Paul Bunyanesque
creatures have inhabited the area and shaped the gently rolling
hills, small ponds, and numerous lakes. These unnamed creatures
still roamed the country side at times causing mud slides, sink

Japan-Suicide
In Japan, suicide is an acceptable way to solve problems. The
Japanese feel that the spirit is more important than the body and
still lives on after death.
In fact, in Japan there is a lovers' leap. Lovers whose families
won't allow them to marry tie themselves together and jump together.

MANY LEGENDS ARE BUILT AROUND SUPPOSED HAPPENINGS IN
CONNECTION WITH LAVA FLOWS IN THE OUTLYING ISLANDS
OF THE HAWAIIAN CHAIN. I HAVE HEARD SEVERAL VARIA-
TIONS OF THIS TALE.
ONE DAY ONE OF "THE OLD ONES" (A LEGENDARY PERSON WHO
APPEARS IN MORTAL FORM, ASKING FOR ALMS) APPEARED AT
THE DOOR OF A POOR MAN'S HUT ON THE SLOPES OF MAUNA
KEA. HE WAS GIVEN HOSPITALITY, AND WHEN IT WAS TIME
FOR HIM TO GO, HE INSTRUCTED THE POOR MAN TO PUT THREE
STONES AT THE FOUR CORNERS OF HIS LAND. THE OLD MAN
DID AS HE WAS TOLD, AND SOON AFTER, THE VOLCANO
ERRUPTED AND LAVA POURED DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, DESTROYING
EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH--BUT WHEN IT REACHED THE OLD
MAN'S LAND, IT SPLIT AND WENT AROUND. (THEY WILL
STILL SHOW YOU A NUMBER OF PLACES WHICH ARE BARE OF
LAVA AND THERE IS A VARIATION OF THE STORY TO GO
WITH EACH ONE.)

BAMBOOS HAVE WHITE FLOWERS ONCE EVERY SIXTY YEARS AND
WITHER ALL OF THEM ONCE EVERY THIRTY YEARS. FOUR YEARS AGO

WE HAD AN UNUSUAL TYPHOON SEASON. THIS YEAR (1977) IN SOME
