OUT IN ARIZONA, THERE WAS A DAM BUILT ABOUT SEVEN YEARS
AGO, BUT I DO NOT KNOW THE NAME OF IT. THE INDIANS IN
THAT AREA BELIEVE THAT THE DAM WAS BUILT INTO A
MONSTER'S BACK AND THAT ONE DAY THE MONSTER WILL WAKE
UP AND DESTROY THE DAM AND PEOPLE.

Indian Ritual

Cherokee Indians believe that when near death their
hands should be placed over their heart in order to allow
the spirit horse to come and deliver their soul away.

Submitter comment: I read this in a student publication section from the
University of Arizona student newspaper.

THE COMPANY STORE

THE INSTITUTION KNOWN AS THE COMPANY STORE, IMMORTALIZED IN THE
SONG "SIXTEEN TONS" STILL EXISTS.
WHILE THOUGHT TO BE SOMETHING OUT OF THE PAST, OWING ITS FAME TO THE
SONG, WHILE TRAVELING THROUGH THE COPPER COUNTRY OF ARIZONA, I CAME
UPON ONE OPERATED BY PHELPS_DODGE CORPORATION. UPON TALKING TO SOME
OF THE EMPLOYEES, I FOUND THAT THE BASIC CONCEPT IS STILL THE SAME
AS THE NOTORIOUS STORES OF THE EASTERN MOUNTAIN "COAL TOWNS" _ THE
EMPLOYEE CAN BUY FROM THE COMPANY AND HAVE HIS BILL (WHICH, FROM
PRICING THE ITEMS, WOULD BE A BIT HIGH) PAID BY DEDUCTIONS FROM HIS
PAYCHECK (WITH INTEREST}), OF COURSE, TODAY THE MINER IS NOT
COMPELED TO BUY THERE.

Shaping a crystal from Vantana Canyon into the shape of a
triangle and wearing it around the neck will bring good
health and luck.

Submitter comment: When I was in Arizona, this neck piece was one of the
hottest items to wear and people felt good wearing it.

Mt. Lemon in Tucson, Arizona is said to have the Red God of
Fire. This is a creature which walks the mountain whenever
heat lightning strikes the mountain in the form of red
lightning.

Submitter comment: A silly myth, of course everybody knows that light cannot
walk. The short story was still imaginative and somewhat
interesting.
