Bio:
In the emeritus nomination letter, Dr. Shadi Banitaan, Associate Professor and Director, Computer Science and Software Engineering, wrote “Long before coming to UDM (University of Detroit Mercy), nearly twenty years ago, Kevin was a Fellow of British Computer Society (BCS) with extensive experience and leadership in both academia and industry. He worked as the Head of Computer Science Department at the University of Technology in Baghdad, Iraq for four years, and he also directed the University of Technology’s Computer Center for ten years, and was the Manager of the Computer Department at Wrigley’s Supermarket (chain store) in San Diego for the period 1993-1996, and a computer Consultant at Computer Software Inc. for three years. Furthermore, as a Senior Systems Analyst at the computer department, Central Bank of Iraq, he served as the Head Training for two years.”
Dr. Kevin Daimi joined University of Detroit Mercy (formerly University of Detroit) as a Part-time Instructor in 1996 teaching courses in Management Information Systems, and Data Structures in the College of Business Administration as well as Assembly Languages, Data Structures, and Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the College of Engineering and Science. In 1998 Dr. Daimi was hired as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science earning promotion to Full Professor in 2002.
Teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses from 1998-2002, Dr. Daimi was from 1998-2007 directing the Ford Motor Company On-site Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Program. Dr. Daimi served as the chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (2002-2007) and then served as the Director of Computer Science and Software Engineering programs beginning in 2008.
Before joining Detroit Mercy, Dr. Daimi taught undergraduate courses in Computing Architecture, Programming, and Computer Science at Lawrence Technological University, Southfield MI; was Computer Manager for Madlain Inc., National City CA; taught numerous courses in C, C++, Artificial Intelligence, Assembly Language, Compiler Design, Digital Logic, Parallel Algorithms, Operations Research, Embedded Programming, Systems Analysis, Database Design, Distributed Systems, Computer Graphics, and more for the Department of Computer Science, University of Technology, Baghdad, Iraq. He also served as a Visiting Research Fellow, School of Education, Computer Unit, at the University of Exeter, England where he researched Computer-Assisted Instruction of Mathematics and trained High School Teachers of Mathematics and Statistics in Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instruction.
The emeritus nomination letter by Dr. Banitaan stated “His (Dr. Daimi) leadership philosophy is based on learning from internal and external challenges, viewing the tasks of listening, promoting team work, breaking down communication barriers (critically important!), instilling and facilitating initiative and responsibility at all organizational levels, and living what he instructs/teaches. Kevin commands respect by being a living example of his philosophy, and passes this on in his mentoring and collegiality.”
As a faculty member, Dr. Daimi was affiliated with many professional organizations, some examples of which are: Senior Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM); Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE); Chartered IT Professional Fellow of the British Computer Society (BCS); International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB); ACM special interest groups on Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, and Health Informatics; and IEEE Computer Society Technical Committees on Software Engineering, Bioinformatics, Computation Medicine, and Security and Privacy.
There are over one hundred professional activities noted in Dr. Daimi’s vitae, where he served as a “Program Committee Member, Advisory Committee Member, Session Chair, Panel Moderator, and Steering Committee Member for many national and international conferences. Most notably, he has been organizing and chairing the annual International Conference on Security and Management (SAM) in Las Vegas since 2012 (Summarized by Dr. Banitaan).” Some of Dr. Daimi’s activities were for Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing (ASC), Software Engineering Research and Practice (SERP), Data Mining (DMIN), Security and Management (SAM), Requirements Engineering for High Assurance Systems (RHAS), Bioinformatics and Computation Biology (BIOCOMP), and Defense Against Spam in Electronic Communication (DaSECoo).
As written by Dr. Banitaan “Another good measure of how respected a professor is within his field is the extent of his service in professional societies and peer-reviewed journals. Keven is a member of the Editorial Board for the following journals: American Journal of Undergraduate Research, International Journal of Bio-Science and Bio-Technology (IJBSBT), Information Security Education Journal (ISEJ), and International Journal on Advances in Telecommunication. He is also a reviewer for some IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) journals…”
Dr. Katherine Snyder, Dean, College of Engineering and Science, in her nomination support letter noted the number of honors received by Dr. Daimi. Dr. Snyder wrote “Dr. Daimi received the University of Detroit Mercy’s Faculty Excellence Award in 2013, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2012, 2010, and 2009 World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Applied Computing. He received the Recognition and Appreciation of Contributions to UTECH 2007.” Dr. Daimi also received the Best Paper Award for A Security Architecture for Remote Diagnosis of Vehicle Defects at the 2017 International Conference on Telecommunications in Venice Italy; and the Best Paper Award for Securing Vehicle’s Electronic Control Units at the 2016 International Conference on Networking and Services in Lisbon Portugal.
As busy as he was serving on external professional organizations, Dr. Daimi was just as active within the college and university. He served as Chair of the Computer Science/Software Engineering Curriculum Committee, Chair of the Search Committee for a Computer Science Faculty ten times, Computer Club Advisor, ACM Student Chapter Advisor, Chair of the Software Engineering Program Accreditation Committee, UDM/Ford Visteon Steering Committee, UDM/Ford Steering Committee, Engineering and Science Brand Image Committee, College Graduate Programs Review Task Force, UDM/Engineering Society of Detroit Steering Committee, Future of Computing at Detroit Mercy Task Force, Faculty Advisory Council for Cooperative Education and Career Center, University Program Prioritization Process Review Task Force, IT Executive Director Search Committee, University Tenure and Promotion, etc.
