Bio:
Dr. Linda Slowik joined the University as a member of the Psychology Department in 2004. She has quickly proven to be an outstanding teacher and colleague, a wonderful mentor to students completing research and practicums in the department, and a dynamic and involved member of the larger University community.
As a teacher, students have consistently described Dr. Slowik as “extremely knowledgeable,” ”interesting and clear,” and “consistently available and helpful.” She is a highly versatile instructor, who has taught everything from 1000-2000 level undergraduate courses, to upper-level seminars on advanced statistics and research methods for the Ph.D. students. The ratings on Dr. Slowik’s course evaluation forms are consistently among the highest in the large department of 16 full-time and approximately 20 part-time faculty. These ratings are particularly impressive given that Dr. Slowik frequently teaches courses on research methodology and quantitative analysis, which students often find to be among the most difficult material in a psychology program.
Along with her excellence in the classroom, Dr. Slowik is rapidly emerging as a leading scholar in the area of industrial/organization psychology. To date, her work has appeared in such refereed journals as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Organizational and Occupational Psychology and Human Relations (to name a few). While she is early in her career, Dr. Slowik has already collaborated in her research not only with scholars from her own discipline, but also with faculty from the Colleges of Engineering and Health Professions, showing the strong inter-disciplinary appeal of her work.
In terms of service, Dr. Slowik is a very active member of the University community. A few of her many activities have included serving as an elected representative for her college to the McNichols Faculty Assembly (MFA), and serving as both secretary and MFA representative to the Undergraduate Program Review Committee. She has been an Acting Director of the M.A. program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and is almost always willing to participate actively in work to benefit students and promote the University’s mission.
Dr. Slowik was presented by Charles E. Marske, Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Education and the Faculty Excellence Award was presented by Gerard L. Stockhausen, S.J., President of University of Detroit Mercy on November 13, 2009.
