Faculty Achievement Award

2011

Bio:

Dr. Nihad Dukhan joined UDM’s Mechanical Engineering Department in 2005 and quickly compiled an impressive record of superb student-centered teaching, internationally recognized research, and service to UDM, the community, and the profession.

Dr. Dukhan consistently receives strong teaching evaluations.  He has been described by his students as knowledgeable, approachable, resourceful, creative, and solution-oriented.  He provides an interactive professor-to-student environment and transmits far-reaching understanding of concepts that extend beyond the classroom.  According to one of his students, “Dr. Dukhan never fails to impress me.”

Dr. Dukhan has advised many graduate and undergraduate students working design projects, theses and dissertations.  He is an active contributor to pedagogical scholarship with 20 journal articles and over 55 conference papers (all refereed).  In May of 2006, Crain’s Detroit Business magazine named Dr. Dukhan’s critical research on metal foam form, funded by Ford Motor Company, as one of only “10 research projects to watch,” that will likely change the economy in southeast Michigan.  His research is recognized internationally having been invited to be session chair, panel member, or on the scientific advisory board for several international engineering conferences.

Dr. Dukhan’s portfolio of service is equally impressive. He has served on many departmental, College, and University-level committees.  Demonstrating UDM’s mission with the community, Dr.Dukhan has offered his heat transfer course as a service-learning course in collaboration with the WARM Training Center of Detroit.  He has also served as an Advisory Board Member for Perry Johnson Laboratory Accreditation, Inc. since 2006.  Additionally, Dr. Dukhan has been extensively involved in both national and international conferences and is a regularly invited reviewer for numerous scientific journals.

For the past five years, Dr. Dukhan has embodied the teacher-scholar model in higher education with excellent service to UDM, his profession and the community.  He has constantly obtained strong student evaluations and has built a thriving research facility for metal foam research.  He has demonstrated exceptional merit and accomplishment as a junior faculty member.

Dr. Dukhan was presented by Leo E. Hanifin, Dean, College of Engineering & Science and the Faculty Achievement Award was presented by Pamela Zarkowski, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of Detroit Mercy on November 11, 2011.
