HISTORY OF WORD

HONEYMOON - IN THE DAYS WHEN MEN STOLE THEIR BRIDES FROM OTHER
TRIBES, IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO DISAPPEAR UNTIL HER FAMILY'S
TEMPERS COOLED. ONE MONTH - OR A "MOON" - WAS CUSTOMARY. THE
GROOM'S FAMILY PROVIDED THE FLEEING COUPLE WITH GOODIES. FAVORITE
GIFT IN ENGLAND WAS MEAD - A MILD LIQUOR MADE WITH HONEY WHICH
THE COUPLE SIPPED AS THEY GOT ACQUAINTED. THUS, THIS TIME WAS
THIER "HONEY-MOON." THE WEDDING VEIL WAS ALSO PART OF BRIDAL
CAPTURE. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO CONCEAL THE BRIDE'S IDENTITY FROM
PURSUING RELATIVES.
