ARMY NURSE

IN WORLD WAR I, REGISTERED NURSES WERE DRAFTED. WHEN THE ARMISTICE
WAS SIGNED, THEY STILL HAD TO FINISH THEIR TOURS OF DUTY. SOME
WERE SENT TO THE KENTUCKY HILLS, WHERE THE ONLY MEANS OF
TRANSPORTATION WAS A MULE. "MOST OF US WERE EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD CITY
GALS. PICTURE US PUSHING AND PULLING THOSE DUMB ANIMALS UP THE
HILLS."
