Detroit Red Wing Superstar for 25 years

President's Cabinet Award

1972

Bio:

Professional hockey player who played for both the Detroit Red Wings and the Hartford Walers of the National Hockey League; played for the Houston Aeros and New England Whalers in the World Hockey Assocation.  He played for four decades and became know as Mr. Hockey.  He was the recipient of both the Hart Trophy as most valuable player and the Art Ross Trophy as leading scorer.  He wore number 9 while playing for the Red Wings.

During your 25 years in professional hockey with the Detroit Red Wing organization, you became the very symbol of professional athletics at its finest for fans here and around the world.  The special esteem that young people and adults have for you exists not only because of your skill and discipline as an athlete but also because of your unfailing demonstration of kindness and concern for your fellow man.

Award was presented on May 20, 1972 in Cobo Hall by Fr. Malcolm Carron, S.J., President of the University.
