Kate relates better to dogs than people and is oblivious to the charms of a kind veterinarian as she carries on with a married man. The shelter's receptionist is desperately trying to have a baby, while the handyman is trying to immigrate to Canada but his plans change as he starts to fall in love with a single mother.  In English.

Tired of relinquishing their food supply but woefully inept in combat skills, the villagers decide to hire a band of samurai to protect them. In addition to the primary conflict between the villagers and the bandits, much of the tale revolves around young Katsushiro's coming-of-age, both sexually and emotionally. Kikuchiyo's search for acceptance forms the other major storyline. Indeed, everyone in Seven Samurai is searching: for adventure, for experience, for freedom from their oppressors. He discovers that the job is actually for a 'Nokanshi' or 'encoffineer,' a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art, acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. Still troubled by the relationship, Takata decides to go to China and complete his son's work in part to develop an understanding of his son, and in part to do something for him.
