PUERTO RICAN MEN (PUERTORICANOS), ARE ALWAYS CONCERNED
ABOUT BEING "MUY MACHO" (VERY MASCULINE). THEY MUST
NEVER SHOW WEAKNESS OF ANY KIND. FOR THIS REASON,
YOU NEVER CAN BELIEVE ONE WHEN HE GIVES YOU DIRECTIONS,
BECAUSE HE MUST NEVER LET ON IF HE DOESN'T KNOW THE
ANSWER. HE WILL GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS--INVARIABLY--
WHETHER THEY ARE CORRECT OR NOT.

I HAD OBSERVED THAT THE PUERTO RICAN PEASANTRY (JIBAROS) WERE
VERY (UNDERLINED) CLEAN PEOPLE. THEIR SHACKS, WHILE
REFLECTING AN EXTREME LEVEL OF POVERTY, WERE SPOTLESS. THE
CHILDREN WERE DRESSED IN CLOTHES WHICH SHOWED THAT SOMEBODY
CARED. THEY WERE STARCHED AND IRONED WITH GREAT CARE. THE
BOYS INVARIABLY WORE LITTLE SPORT SHIRTS WHICH LOOKED NEW, AND
MUST HAVE COST A LARGE PORTION OF THE FAMILY'S INCOME. KNOWING
HOW THESE PEOPLE VALUED THEIR MALE CHILDREN, I COULDN'T HELP
WONDERING WHY THE LITTLE BOYS (UNDER FOUR) ALWAYS RAN AROUND
IN THEIR IMMACULATE SHIRTS--ONLY. NEVER DID THEY WEAR ANY
GARMENT ON THE LOWER PART OF THE BODY. WHY--IF THEY COULD
AFFORD SHIRTS, WHY NOT PANTS?
IT IS THE BELIEF THAT A BOY WILL BE MACHO (VIRILE) IF THE
SUN IS ALLOWED TO SHINE ON HIS GENITALIA AS MUCH OF THE TIME
AS POSSIBLE WHILE HE IS LITTLE. LITTLE GIRLS ARE ALWAYS
COVERED UP.

COAL MINER'S BELIEF

AN ANCIEN BELIEF AMONG MANY COAL MINERS IS THAT IT IS BAD LUCK
FOR A WOMAN TO COME INTO THE MINES. I ASKED THREE VETERANS
OF COAL MINING, CANDY WRIGHT, RICH CLAUSE, AND BILL STOTT,
IF THEY HAD HEARD THIS OLD SAYING. THEY SAID THEY HAD HEARD
IT MANY TIMES, BUT THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE IT. THEY REMEMBERED
WOMEN BEING ALLOWED TO TOUR THE MINES WHERE THEY WORKED AND
NOTHING HAPPENED. THIS TALE IS JUST "DOODLE DUST" AS WE
MINERS SAY.

A WOMAN SHOULD BE THE FIRST TO ENTER A HOME ON NEW YEAR'S
DAY. IF A WOMAN ENTERS FIRST THE HOUSEHOLD WILL HAVE BAD

(CATCH TALE)

Historical record from James Callow Folklore Archive.

I WAS HITCH-HIKING HOME ONE DAY AND THIS GUY IN A
SPORTS CAR PICKED ME UP. AFTER ABOUT A HALF HOUR OF
USUAL BULL-SHIT, THIS GUY SLID HIS HAND OVER ONTO MY
KNEE. I GAVE HIM A DIRTY LOOK AND REMOVED HIS HAND.
ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER, HE SLID HIS HAND OVER ONTO
MY KNEE AGAIN, AND I AGAIN REMOVED IT. WHEN HE DID IT
A THIRD TIME, I TOLD HIM TO STOP THE CAR, AS I WAS
GETTING OUT. AS I WAS GETTING OUT, HE PULLED THIS
SPRAY CAN OUT FROM UNDER THE SEAT AND SAID IN HIS
MOST FAGGOT VOICE, "YOU SILLY BITCHES ARE ALL THE
SAME. AFTER THIS YOU'LL BE JUST LIKE ME" AND HE
SPRAYED THIS SHIT ON ME.
AND THIS IS THE SAME SWEATER I HAD ON THAT DAY, AND IT
STILL SMELLS RIGHT HERE (HE POINTS TO A SPOT ON HIS
CHEST). HERE SMELL IT. (AND AS THE GUY DOES, HE
KISSES THE GUY ON THE CHEEK.)
