FESTIVAL OF HOLI

IT IS ALSO CALLED THE FESTIVAL OF COLORS AND IS CELEBRATED
IN THE SPRINGTIME, AND HAS NO PARTICULAR RELIGIOUS
SIGNIFICANCE, BUT IS SIMPLY AN EXPRESSION OF JOY AND
LOVE, AND WELCOMES THE BEAUTIFUL SEASON.
BOTH MEN AND WOMEN SPRINKLE POWDER OF ALL COLORS ON THEIR
FRIENDS, BOTH IN THE STREETS AND IN THE HOMES. (ORIGIN-
ALLY THE POWDER WAS ALWAYS RED--THE INDIAN SYMBOL OF
LOVE). PEOPLE INVITE FRIENDS TO THEIR HOME FOR MEALS AND
VISITING.

SETSUBUR IS THE CEREMONY PERFORMED ON THE EVE OF THE
SPRINGTIDE.
SETSUBUR WAS BORN FROM THE OLD BELIEF THAT THE GODS VISIT
EVERY HOUSE AND BRING IT GOOD LUCK. ON THE NIGHT OF
SETSUBUR THE JAPANESE FAMILY THROWS PARCHED BEANS BOTH
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE HOUSE, CRYING "FUKU WA UCKI! ONI
WA SOK!" WHICH MEANS, "IN WITH LUCK, OUT WITH DEVILS."
IT IS SAID IN THIS WAY SICKNESS AND EVIL CAN BE DRIVEN
OUT AND HAPPINESS ENJOYED.

IN THE SPRING OF THE YEAR, IN SOME SWISS STATES, A
COW FIGHT IS HAD. THIS IS A BIG AFFAIR, SOMEWHAT
LIKE A SPECIAL HORSE RACE IN OUR COUNTRY. (BETS
ARE EVEN MADE ON THE OUTCOME.) THIS FIGHT IS TO
DETERMINE WHICH COW, THE STRONGEST, CAN WEAR THE
BIGGEST BELL.

THE FLOATING CANDLE AND LUCK

ONE CUSTOM REQUIRES THAT YOU LIGHT A CANDLE AND STICK
IT INTO A PIECE OF WOOD AND THEN FLOAT IT IN THE RIVER.
IF IT REMAINS LIT, AND CONTINUES TO FLOAT UNTIL
IT IS COMPLETELY OUT OF YOUR SIGHT, YOUR WISH WILL
COME TRUE.
THIS IS DONE ON A CERTAIN FRIDAY AT THE BEGINNING OF
SPRING. YEARS AGO IN THE LATE AFTERNOON, ONE COULD SEE
TENS OF THESE CANDLES FLOATING AND RUNNING DOWN THE
RIVER, MAKING A BEAUTIFUL SPECTACLE.
