ARMY CUSTOM
IN VIETNAM IT IS CUSTOM AND GOOD LUCK FOR THE SOLDIERS
TO WRITE THE NAME OF AT LEAST ONE GIRL HE KNEW ON
HIS HELMET. THEY ALSO BELIEVED THAT YOU WOULD
NEVER MARRY THIS GIRL. WRITING THIS NAME WAS GOOD
LUCK AS FAR AS SURVIVING WENT, BUT BAD LUCK AS
FAR AS RELATIONSHIP WITH HER.
Submitter comment:
INFORMANT REALLY BELIEVES IN THIS AS THE TWO GUYS THAT
DIED IN HIS OUTFIT DIDN'T HAVE NAMES ON THEIR HELMETS.

LEATHERNECK
THE TERM LEATHERNECK DATES BACK TO THE DAYS WHEN THE
MARINES FOUGHT THE PIRATES. THE BOARDING PARTIES
USED TO WEAR LARGE LEATHER COLLARS SO THAT IF THEY
WERE STRUCK IN THE NECK WITH A SWORD, IT WOULDN'T
HURT THEM.
EVEN TODAY IN THEIR UNIFORM, YOU CAN SEE THIS BY
TH E HIGH STARCHED COLLAR THEY WEAR IN THEIR
DRESS UNIFORMS.

OUTCASTS
IF A MARINE BATTALION LOSES ITS COLORS, FLAG, IN
BATTLE, THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO RETURN TO THE UNITED
STATES UNTIL THEY REGAIN IT IN BATTLE.
FOR EXAMPLE: DURING WORLD WAR II THE FOURTH MARINE
BATTALION WAS FIGHTING WITH THE ARMY ON CORRIGADOR.
WHEN THE ARMY SURRENDERED ITS COLORS, THE MARINES
REFUSED TO DO SO AND BURNED THEIRS. SINCE THEY
LOST THEIR COLORS, THEY COULD NOT RETURN TO
THE UNITED STATES AND THEY WERE STATIONED IN HAWAII
WHEN IT WAS NOT A STATE. THEY HAVE SINCE WON THEIR
COLORS BACK FIGHTING IN VIETNAM.

THE VOW OF BEING A DOG STRAP SOLDIER.
WHEN A SOO INDIAN VOWS TO BE A DOG STRAP SOLDIER HE PUTS A STAKE
IN THE GROUND AND TIES A TEN-FOOT DOG STRAP TO IT. HE THEN TIES
THE OTHER END TO HIS ANKLE AND HE VOWS NOT TO FLEE DURING BATTLE.
Submitter comment:
THIS IS A VOW OF BRAVERY. IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO THE SIOUX
TO BE BRAVE THAN TO WIN THE BATTLE.

IN AFGHANISTAN, THE VARIOUS MOUNTAIN TRIBES PLAY A
POPULAR GAME. THE GAME GOES LIKE THIS.
THE MEN OF THE TRIBE, MOUNTED ON HORSEBACK, ARE EQUIPPED
WITH POLES THAT HAVE A LONG BLADE ON THE END. WHILE ON
HORSEBACK, THEY MUST KILL A YOUNG CALF WITH THEIR POLES
AND CUT OFF THE HEAD. THEN THEY MUST ROLL THE HEAD OF THE
CALF FROM ONE END OF THE FIELD TO THE OTHER, AND THEN
BACK AGAIN TO WHERE THEY STARTED. THE ONE IN POSSESSION
OF THE HEAD AT THIS POINT WINS THE GAME.
Submitter comment:
SINCE THE SOVIET INVASION OF AFGHANISTAN, THE AFGHANIS
NOW USE CAPTURED SOVIET POW'S FOR THIS GAME INSTEAD OF
THEIR CATTLE, WHICH THEY FEEL THAT THEY MUST CONSERVE.
